The closer gearing - the faster the acceleration, but the less top speed. For example: 3.23 cars accelerate faster from 0-80 than 2.73 cars, but 2.73 cars accelerate faster from 120-150 than 3.23 cars. With the closer 3.23 gear ratio, your RPMs spend more time in the power band than with 2.73 cars which spend less time in the powerband. The difference in the 1/4 mile for a 2.73 and 3.23 bone stock LS1 is usually about .5 with the 3.23 being .5 faster, judging by the average. This is why some people like to put 3.73 and 4.10 gears in their cars, so they make the gears even closer together and spend even more time in their powerband, thus improving acceleration, especially in the first few gears.
