Default T/C and Gear advice for new T/A owner

I just bought a '98 T/A w/ an A4 and 2.73 gears (ABS and traction control). I plan to keep the motor stock for some time except for a K&N and a TB bypass. What gears and converter would you guys reccomend and what parts would i need to bring to my mechanic to swap these? i understand i need a different carrier if i go to 3.23/41/73 gear ratio?

Thanks for the input!

-Jason

EDIT: Also, what brand gears would you reccomend and where can i get them?

You shouldnt need a different carrier.. I went from stock 2.73's to 3.73's without swapping the carrier.

My first stall/gear set up was a TCI SSF 3500/Motive 3.73's...

How was your launch? What did you think of the Motive gears, and where did you get them?

Do you do ALOT of highway driving? Something to consider too.

4:10's @ ~65mph = ~3000 RPM
3:73's @ ~65mph = ~2500 RPM
3:23's @ ~65mph = ~1800 RPM

I have had all three. and this is close to the mph =rpm.

I went from 2.73's to 3.73's and the car is much better. The granny gears lag and the 3.73's do add some fun factor.

I do quite a bit of highway driving, but i don't want to put 3.23's in it and then turn around and decide i want something more and have to do it all over again. Any thoughts on a TC?

Well, you allways have the 3:42 option. A daily driver TC, a 3200-3500 would work fine.

There is no real noticeable difference between the two gear ratios. IMO, either one is a perfect setup for DD practicality and performance. 2800-3200 Vig, 3000-3500 TCI, or 3200-3600 Yank SS will all make for a great combo with those gears.

I think i've decided to go with some motive or slp 3.73's and a yank or tci 3000-3500 stall converter. I got some install prices from my shop. they priced the gear install plus all the bearings and seals at $750 and the T/C install at $450. Do you think that's reasonable? Will i need to tune my speedo after changing the gears?

Both of those are a little higher than I would expect. $1,200 is a bit much for both pieces installed by a qualified shop. The TC is a quick job and $250-$300 is a fair price. The gear installed should be about the same if you supply the gears and installation kit that includes all seals, bearings etc. You will need a tune following the gear swap for the speedometer. The TC should be fine without a tune.
