Default Pro 5.0 installed - doesn't feel right

I installed a pro 5.0 shifter on my car two days ago. I trimmed the boot around the base, and double checked my install last night. The car is mostly stock except for a few suspension mods and has 8000 miles. The shifter feels real notchy - it goes really hard into every gear. It is much harder than stock. It shifts smoother with the car off than with the car running.

Is this normal? I was figuring that I would be able to slam this thing in gear pretty hard, but that is not the case. I am going to the track tomorrow and I am worried that it may actually slow me down.

Any input on the shifting feel of your pro 5.0 would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Geoff

The 5.0 pro shifter is very adjustable. it sounds like you adjusted the two bolts to far out. I think that you should tighten them up a bit. We had the same problem in my friends mustang. In my oppinion the 5.0 pro shifter is the best there is. You'll have a blast once you get it properly adjusted. You'll be slammin gears with ease <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Try backing the Pro 5.0 stop-bolts all the way out. You won't hurt the trans, it's got built in stops. Give that a try and see if it's still notchy.

If that doesn't work, something is wrong. Not trying to be a wise ***, is the shifter installed upside down?

Oh it could be that too. I've seen that done before. If I remember the "pro 5.0" insignia should be upside down. It should be pointing to the motor when you are sitting in the driver's seat.

I have the same problem with my T56 and Pro 5.0. The problem isn't with the stops, it is the transition between the gears. It is as if the shifter isn't oriented correctly, but it is...there isn't a lot of room for rotation. I have a hard time going into third and shifting between gears is notchy. I have a stock shifter for it but I'm too lazy to give that one a go. I had the new pro 5.0 in it when I first did the install.

keep me updated if you conclude what's wrong. Meanwhile I'll keep my eye out for a good stock hurst shifter on ebay.

I hope that all it is just a bad shifter. I used to have a hurst on my '76 Trans Am 455 4-speed and that thing would shift as fast as you could move it. I was hoping that the pro-5.0 would do the same with a short toss added in.
