Default Th400 or 4l60E for my 68 Firebird LS1 swap

I have a TH400 built for about 900hp now with a 3000 stall for about 600hp that is currently in the car. I bought a 4th gen roller chasis for $100 last week and he wanted to sell me the trans with it for $1100. It's a built 4l60e but i'm not sure how well it will work. The ls1 i am swapping in has a 236/236 .651/.651 110lsa cam, no accessories, will be carbed and an 800cfm dominator.

This engine will be also a heads/408 motor once the swap is in and fitting fine for me. Ive been tossing around the idea of using my bullet proof th400 that ive only put about 20 miles on or using the built 4l60e i would however have to get a stall for it. So my question is can i use the 4l60e as a full manual auto and will it withstand say 500rwhp+? Buying it from a friend who says he had it rebuilt for about $2400 and was told if he even broke it with his 383 the guy would rebuilt it for free.

I like the idea of overdrive but would just as much like to have the 6 speed in there and for $1100 i could almost have it being id still have to buy a stall.

anyway how well will an lt1 4l60e bolt up to my ls1? how well will it hold up? Will it work with no PCM harnss? Can it be made full manual with lock up switch?

thanks guys,

Shawn

From what I read on here I wouldn't waste my time with a 4l60E on anything.

Well I've blown up a stock 4l60e and every other automatic ive ever owned in the 50+ cars but this th400 i currently have and the allison in my 400hp 700tq duramax. I've destroyed a t56 internals in my 465rwhp z06 so to me anything is breakable its all in the build.

List the build sheet for this 4L60E and a bunch of people can tell you if it will hold the power. I have a feeling you don't know whats in it though. Theres the problem.

I think im just going to stick with my th400 for now until i get the engine all in and settled and see how it drives. Then i'll probably swap in a t56. I'm really just not a fan of autos. I dont know the build on it you're right im just going but my friend saying it wont break haha

you said at the end that its an lt1 4l60e. if it is an lt1 tranny, then it will not bolt up to an ls1. you could always look into a 4l80e, overdrive with some *****.

The stock LT1, 4L80E, TH400, TH350, 700R4 all have the same exact mounting points as far as bolt patterns, converter pilot length.

To use an LT1 4L60E you just need to use the same parts you'd use to adapt any of the above mentioned transmissions. Which is usually a TC pilot spacer and flexplate with the proper bolt pattern.

I figured it would bolt up but I'm still unsure about making it a full manual transmission and how i would activate the lock up of the converter as i have no harness at all its a carb setup

You'd need a transgo kit to make it operate full manual without a computer, the kit also converts it to vacuum modulation. The TC can be locked up by sending 12 volts to the lock up solenoid through one wire using a toggle switch.
