Default Tranny Fluid In 4L60E Tailstock-Yes or No???

2001 Camaro SS 4L60E transmission. Is the tailstock housing filled with transmission fluid normally? Its leaking out past the rear seal. Thanks in advance.

Yes, the Tailhousing is supposed to hold some fluid... the rearmost bushing needs to lubricated. This is the bushing that supports the driveshft yoke.

That bushing may be worn causing the yoke to disfigure the seal, thus causing the leak. Sometimes simply replacing the seal is not enough, be sure to inspect the bushing for abnormal or excessive wear while you are there!

In most cases, the seal doesn't leak unless it is improperly installed, or its mating surface is damaged. Usually the bushing gets some wear on it, and the fluid starts blowing past the seal.

Only use the Teflon bushing and the triple lip Vamac seal. The Vamac seal is prelubed. Make sure that the driveshaft yoke is in "perfect" shape. It must have a very smooth or mirror finish to it. The extension housing holds very little fluid. If you have a lot of fluid here in the tail section, the level in your unit is too high, or you have a torque converter drainback problem, which means that the level could be correct, but as the vehicle sits, the TC starts to drainback. This has not been a common problem with 4L60E's though.

Default Good Info

Great info guys. Thanks. I just pull the yoke/driveshaft, remove & replace the rear seal from the outside, and grease & reinstall the driveshaft, correct? Is draining the transmission required?

No draining the fluid is not required. you will lose some out of the tailshaft when you remove the seal but not enough to worry about. Just make sure to check your fluid level after you are done replacing the seal.

tail stock holds some fluid if it leaks you need to check your drive shaft us see if loose of it may have just wore out a big problem with 700r4s is little fluid at tail stock thus a hum at speeds of 45mph just open up and a shift kit helps solve problem
