Default How many people have noise when going D - R

Car only has 48K on it. When I got it recently I noticed that shifting from drive to reverse (or vice versa) I usually get a sloppy clunk and sometimes kind of like a metallic "ding".

Just did both U-joints - did not solve it. No other noises at all while driving. I have read that it is not uncommon for this slop in the drivline - but the metal sound makes me wonder.

Car is in for a front seal today - so I guess they will tell me if the trans mount or torque arm is shot - anything else? or is this considered normal?

My last was Z was a 6-speed so I don't know if this is completely normal for the A4.

Be sure to check the transmissions and engine mounts.

But I am certain the noise you described is the driveshaft... is it still the original alunimum model that the good General installed new? If so that is going to be the source of the noise I bet.

At the risk of sounding ignorant, Who is "the good General"?

And are you saying that an aluminum driveshaft will just normally do that?

General Motors.

They can and will do that. My '03 Dodge truck did it. Ask the shop that has it to check your driveshaft u-joints. It is very simple to look them over excessive wear.

Aluminum driveshafts will sort of make a ping when changing directions. But if its more like a clunking noise, its probably the tranny or torque arm. If you also let off the gas right at the exact moment the tranny shifts from 1-2 you should get the same noise

The u-joints were just done and the noise is still there. I guess I was wondering if the rear could be causing it. But it does seem that it is somewhat normal (though annoying and junky sounding ) from what you are saying.

Well certainly the rear axle could be causing a noise when changing from reverse to drive. That is something the shop could easily check for as well... just a mater of putting their hands on it!
