Question for Tranny Pro's out there~! Ok, im in a tough spot here, Car is a street car, forged engine, twin turbo. Will only run on 18" DR's all the time. Wont ever see a street tire, nor do i plan to run a bigger sidewall slick. Car will make power. I have a stock 4l60-e ATM which needs to be replaced before i blow it. I plan on running it for now to break in my new motor and such but will need a trans very soon. Heres the question... At what point do you pro's out there think power wise is a good time to make the switch from the 60-e to the 80-e? I am aware at high power levels, even built to the hills 60-es wont last long and need refreshings. I do not want to have to deal with refreshings all the time, however i feel being mainly a street car, 3200 ish stall on 18" wheels, it will help the trans out but being full weight might harm it a little. Considering my car, at what power level do you think i should consider the 80-e swap vs. a built 60-e? Talking about MY car here.... Thank you very much! |
In the 700+rwhp territory, it is questionable, but for sure by 800rwhp. Alot of it has to do with your driving style. |
I agree 700 plus I mean the 4l60e will survive in the 700 to 800 range but your pushing it hard there. And it depends greatly on how you drive the car and what you use it for on how long it will hold up in that range, |
Before I make recommendations I like to know what your short term and long term goals are. Short term alot of guys want to be able to dominate the street. And that is a worthy goal to me. But then they head to the track at some point and ususally wick it up... so I need to know what your goals are. I see them living in very healthy 600 hp combinations in F-bodies. Run it hard up to 650 hang it out there and when it breaks... step up. I would be interested in discussing this with you... give me a call tomorrow at the shop. g |
ok thanks for the responses. Im back to school today and busy. If i get a chance between classes i'll give you a call at the shop ACE. Goals for the car. Street car, drive everyday that its nice out. Not too many miles, just around town, to work, etc, but DRIVE IT! Track once a month, drive it there and home (1 hour each way). 18" DR's on everywhere. I want it to be reliable and run solid 10's on pump/meth all day on the 18" DR's. Thats the goals of the car. |
Looking forward to the call! Then my suggestion would be one of our Stage 3 4L60E's or a 4L80E conversion. The 80 will not give you a problem for years to come ordinarilly. The 60 will be a bit of a high maintenance issue. g |
Nice talking to you today Gilbert. I have to run a few errands then i'll send you the PM with specs. I really appreciate your time and helpful, honest advice. Sounds like you guys have quite the set-up out there and thanks again for your time! |
PM sent Gilbert, its a long one, haha. thanks for the help! :drive: |
Glad I could make a difference for you. I know that this is a big decision that guys just like yourself make from time to time, that's why I try to take the time to speak to each and every customer who calls. Replied to p.m..... looking forward to this build! g |
ugh, i had to drop my trans again tonight. I went to bolt up my converter to flywheel to come to find i didnt seat the converter. i could have sworn i had it all the way on there. AHHH, so anyways... my stock tranny is out now again, very tempted to do a swap right now if i can scrounge up the cash. i hate this tranny work! |
720rwhp was my limit with the 4l60e. The hard part's were fine,it just wore the clutche's out in the tranny.:D |
Lol... once you get the 80 in it you're done with the tranny work for a while! I know you have a plan in place... but, I do have a very well built 4L80E in stock that I could get to you in short order. I know it's really not what what we discussed yesterday, but it's highly doable. I didn't mention it because of the time frame we kicked around... lemme know if you're interested in moving sooner. We would need to make just a few mods to it for your particular combination... but it is a solid foundation to start with. We had built it for a customer recently who changed his mind after we started the build, he went with a Glide. Think about it and let me know. g |
Sent a PM about it to you Gilbert |
Replied as well! Call me. g |
