Default HP Wars - 2013 Ford Mustang GT500 Will Pack Larger 5.8L Supercharged V8

New UAW deal confirms 2013 Shelby GT500 will get 5.8-liter supercharged V8

4 October 2011

Today Ford Motor Company and the United Auto Workers agreed to a new four-year contract that will add $6.2 billion of investment to U.S. factories, and a close look at the details reveals some news about the upcoming 2013 Shelby GT500.

There has been much speculation about what engine will be used in the next generation Shelby. Back in March Car and Driver reported that the new GT500 would pack more than 600 horsepower to one-up the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. At the time it was thought the increase in horsepower would come via an increase in displacement to 5.8-liters and that the Eaton M112 supercharger would be replaced with the newer and larger TVS2300 unit. A few months later a batch of photos of a GT500 test mule with an extra larger intercooler testing at the Nürburgring in Germany sparked speculation that a twin-turbo V8 would possibly be the new powerplant.

Now Ford’s new agreement with the UAW shows that the initial report of a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 was indeed correct. The contract states that the Romeo Engine Assembly Plant will receive a $50 million investment and start production of a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 when the 2013 Shelby GT500 goes into production next year. The plant will also continue the production of the 6.2-liter V8 found in the Ford F-150.

In other news, the contract also shows that the AutoAlliance International Assembly Plant, which produces the Mustang, will receive a $555 million investment and take on production of the next generation Ford Fusion in place of the Mazda6.

Who didn't see this coming?

We all knew Ford would up the ponies to keep it above the ZL1 which is the bad thing for GM always being late to the party. With the current ZL1 testing at the ring I wouldn't mind seeing a GT500 run the ring I don't recall having ever seen a GT500 lap the ring.

Also makes you wonder how high will the HP go on these two cars the ZL1 is already above the Z06 and creeping up on the ZL1 in terms of HP of course cars are in a different class but still.

First, fixed.

Secondly With all of the weight that the ZL1 has it still will be a lot slower than the C6 Z06. Thirdly HP isn't everything. All these horsepower wars are gonna see a cap soon because it will get to a point where it won't be practical to make cars that make that much power on the street.

GM will never make the ZL1 better then the C6/C7 ZO6... But competition is always good. Makes cars better. But I def agree it will end somewhere because getting into these high hp numbers is retarded. Noone is going to buy a 700-800 Mustang or Camaro now a days!

Love the HP wars. Makes life just that much more fun. I'd wager that when it's all said and done, the ceiling will be somewhere in the 6s, never seeing 7, though.

The ZR1 already makes 638, it's not too far-fetched to think we'll see 700 in the near future...

I want to bet that sometime after 2015 Mopar plays a trump card. I'm looking for a modern release of a "cuda" (probably a special edition challenger) and I'm betting it will be a new platform or a HP monster. Probably in an extremely limited edition but its still my wishful thinking.

I say this because the new mustang is out in 2013, new camaro in 2014, I'm hoping dodge is just sitting back watching the kids play and really steps up the following year.

Dumbest thing read on the internet this week.

Wikipedia ZL1 and ZR1 for starters then explain what the **** effect 1 letter difference in the name given to a relatively small number production car is going to have in putting GM "back on top"

I hope you are drunk.

I'll drink to that. GM almost has all the performance bases covered now with the ZL1. Based on recent sales figures between stangs and camaros, the ZL1 should out sell the GT500 regardless of how retarded Ford goes with the HP. What GM needs now is a Solstice/Sky replacement that can hang with a Porsche boxster or cayman.

Just so you know, we don't vote on the contract till next Sunday. So your Ford/UAW agreement is just speculation as of right now. And the way most people are talking around my plant is a big **** NO.

If the customer is willing to pay an *** ton of money for the LS9, then GM will produce.

The next Viper reportedly will be in the 700hp region by utilizing direct injection on the current 8.4l bullet.
