Chevy's SS Range Continues To Grow: Meet The HHR SS

HHR SS. That's a lot of damn letters. Well if the rumors are true than I called it. When the turbocharged and direct injected 2.0L turbo was announced for the Solstice I knew it would be the perfect replacement for the underwhelming 205hp Supercharged Ecotec under the hood of the Cobalt SS Supercharged and the Ion Redline. I didn't think however that it would be coming to the HHR first. In any case this is good news for those who were looking to buy an HHR but worried about those pesky Caliber SRT-4s and Mazdaspeed 3s. My guess is that this motor may also find it's way into the Euro market Opel/Vauxhall Astra OPC/VXR that already cranks out a stout 240hp. Here's hoping that it does one day find a home in the revamped Cobalt and the Ion's replacement (likely to be the Astra).

I bet it will sell quite well, seems alot of people say the hhr needs a little more power, and so this has the potential to sell in good numbers as the regular hhr's have been.

The Media hated on this car when it was introduced, Bob Lutz caught alot of flack for making the statement "we will build it and it will sell" or something of that nature, but he did not have to eat his words.

For those of you wanting the top camaro and Vette named the SS...I think this is great. You can have your fast LSx engines related via a family name to this bastardized Dodge badged as a Chevy.

As the owner of a 2006 HHR, I think this is good news. My wife and I bought the HHR to replace the 4.4 V8 powered BMW X5 we had. Great car, but at 12 MPG and $3.00, it not happening. My Trans Am gets better gas mileage even WITH my foot in it. So, we got the HHR because it could still haul the dog in the back (90 pound Golden Retriever), it had satellite radio, heated leather seats, MP3 port, and we got every option. The great thing is, it gets 24MPG in the city. We got 36MPG when we drove to San Antonio (28MPG coming back - but that was doing 90!).
But, while this is mainly my wife's car, I do drive it on the weekends when we go to the store, get the dog cleaned, get stuff for the house at Lowes, etc. I agree that at 176 horses, especially at redline, it ain't enough. It's got a flat spot between 2000-3500rpm, but then takes off. But, it seems like it takes forever to get there! We had thought about retrofiting the Cobalt SS's supercharger to it. But, now it might be easier it it's a bolt on affair with the turbo.
Also, for those that think this is just a Chevy version of the PT Loser, check out the dimensions. The HHR is actually useful. I've bought a door for the back of the house - fit right in. I bought a lingerie chest for the wife - no problem. Try hauling anything but groceries in the back of a PT Loser.

I like the style of it. It's one Chevrolet car you will never mistake for a Toyota, or anything other than a Chevrolet. More turbo is always good as well.

I think the HHR is ugly, but I guess that's why I'm not the one buying one and everyone else is. Ugly - Yes. Versatile and sensible - Yes. Money maker for GM - Yes.
