Gen II diff thoughts - rebuild?
Hey guys - what are your thoughts on rebuilding a 2nd gen diff? Mine had a leaking pinion seal and I "thought" it was a garbage 1st gen. I replaced it with a 1st gen I got on eBay for $85 (it looked brand new) and it was only once it was removed from the car that I discovered it was a 2nd gen.
So - is it worth the $250-$300 to replace the pinion seal, bearings, and seals and throw it back in the car or should I see if I can get a few 100 bucks for it and use $$ towards the purchase of a 4th gen?

If it were me, I would go for the 4th gen. The 2nd gen could end up leaking on you again or breaking. You just don't see the 4th gen diffs breaking.
Having said that, if your 2nd gen is whisper quiet (no whine) you might just want to stick with it. I've heard plenty of stories of people getting brand new 4th gens only to have them whine worse than the one they replaced. That would suck and would **** me off so bad. My car is on the 3rd diff and this latest one is a 4th gen that is so super quiet (love it) and I have over 10k on it now so I think I'm good to go.

from what I understand, Gen I was replaced almost as soon as it was released so the Gen II have often been confused with the Gen I but someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Oh, and as .Houdini. mentioned, the diff was quiet when I removed it so I know it doesn't whine.
