Default spare tire math... smaller = bigger

So I got a MM wheel to use as a spare. I thought the 8" width might help a tiny bit in it fitting in the trunk well. I also thought it would help me run a 225/50-18 as they generally are not rated for a 8.5" wide wheel, but are for an 8" (most, some only recommend 7.5" max).

However, looking at the section widths, they look like this:

225 7" rim: 9.2". To convert to a 8" rim, you add .2" for each 1/2" of rim width (according to the tire rack).

So that's:

225 8" rim: 9.2 + .4 = 9.6" section width

But a

245 8" rim: 9.5" section width

What the hell? The 245 would actually be narrower than the 225??

Obviously that .2" for each 1/2" is just a guideline, but it sounds like a 225 on an 8" wheel is really not going to be any narrower. How is that possible?

Interesting. Not sure why that's the case.

I do know that my 225/50-18 was slightly narrower on the MM than on the stock wheel it used to be on. I don't think I did an actual measurement with either configuration, but the spare tire lid sits probably 1/4" or so closer to flush than it was before.

So you think a 225 is worth it? I already have the MM wheel, now it's a matter of getting a tire.
