Default Transmission noise after fluid change

I changed the fluid in my trans today and used Mobil 1 atf. It appeared to have the original fluid in it as it was really thin(almost like water) and dark. My V has 54k on it. It is making a really load wining noise coming from the trans. Could it be from the thicker oil? Will it quiet down once it heats up?

How much fluid did you put in?

Little less then 4 quarts. Filled it until it started coming out of the fill hole.

Check and bleed (if necessary) the clutch fluid, then report back.

Don't use Mobil 1 ATF. It's too thin for your transmission.

Recommend 3 qt Redline D4 ATF + 1 qt MTL 70W80 GL-4 mix in transmission.

I rechecked the fluid level and it looks good. I have not bleed the clutch but I did change fluid out of the reservoir last week.

Cmon man dont put out bad info on this site. Mobil 1 is the choice by MANY top shops and trans builders across the country.

OP if your fluid was burnt it's likely you have some damage internally that will have to be addressed. Do you have any symptoms like popping out of gear, hard shifting, grinding?

It's not bad information. I've spent $750 testing different motor, transmission, and differential oils on my CTS-V over the past 2 years. Mobile 1 ATF might not be a good oil, but it's not appropriate for the T56.

Consider the evidence: guy takes dirty, Dextron III oil out of a T56 transmission that is working properly and replaces it with Mobil 1 ATF, which is known to be too thin to permit proper operation of T56 synchros and bearings. Immediately notices whining sounds. How do you NOT diagnose that as an oil misapplication?

Popping out of gear and grinding (actually, crunching) are two different symptoms that would not be affected by oil, period. Not having the right fluid viscosity would definitely affect synchro performance and make it harder than usual to shift.

Trans. shifts fine. It has quieted down a little since I've driven it.

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF meets the last, and toughest, Dexron III(H) specification, which is the same specifcation for which Tremec designed the early (2004-2005 at least) T-56s.

Mobil 1 also makes an ATF for the newer Dexron VI specification, which involves a lower viscosity (thinner). At some point, Tremec began producing T-56s designed for this specification. I don't know if any Dexron VI Tremecs are in CTS-Vs, but if that were the case it would show up in the Owner's Manual under recommended lubricants.

There's a placard on the side of my 2006 CTS-V T56 that says "Dextron III only."

Tremec's conversion to Dexron VI was in mid-2006.

I plan on using whatever latest version of compatible Dextron is out there this spring for the swap. Car is at 97k and it shifts great and is silent, so I can't fault the qualities of the OEM stuff...

Anybody buying this part?

Low maintenance
The six-speed uses DEXRON III fluid and is certified "fill-for-life," requiring no fluid changes.

Sure. It is self-fulfilling philosophy. If you never change the fluid the life expectancy of the transmission becomes quite short.

Ha!

I'm dying to disassemble my transmission and see how much metal is stuck to the big doughnut magnets in the bottom. Still debating between doing a group buy on the T56 rebuild ($950) or a group buy on the TR6060 upgrade ($2800). Any thoughts?

I drained the factory fill and put in M1 syn ATF. shifts so much better, noticed on the first shift.

Per M1, its been tested and recommended: http://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/...etic_ATF.aspx# Check the specs / apps.

not that im realistically looking right now, but i assume the linkage on the 6060 is much improved? or would it be using the same linkage?
