Default oil temp at 240-250! and water temp as high as 230

ok guys so i just replaced my water pump and thermostat an my oil temp is now going way to high for my comfort ( I've seen as high as 254) when i'm driving considering before i did the water pump and t stat the oil temp would only get up to maybe as high as 217.

Any suggestions or guesses and what could be wrong here? Could it be the oil temp sensor or something more serious.

Yes i burp the coolant system when i installed the water pump and no there is not a coolant leak so i don't think it could be those.

There was a thread a couple spots down where a guy changed the ground on the oil temp sensor... Do that.

As far as the coolant goes, is that within normal limits now? Or was that 230° after the pump and thermo change? Unless the coolant is getting that high (240-250s) I don't think I'd worry too much. The oil temp is going to be somewhat close to the coolant temps at normal op temps. As I recall on a long road trip my oil was 220-230 all day in the summer and coolant was around 210-220. Pretty standard in my opinion. Both fluids are running through the same block so i would not really expect to see a huge temp difference.

I just ran a ground from my oil temp sensor to the hood strut grounding point, it fixed my high oil temp mis-report issue I had.

if they were reading correctly before the water pump/tstat change, i would continue to look for air in the system.

Did you pressure fill the cooling system? Also are you low on oil? and how is she running besides hot, could be the timing is off.

Turn the heater on full blast and drive around for a bit. This will get the last bit of air out if the system.

So these cars are bad about the oil temp sensor needing a new ground?
I have an aluminum aftermarket radiator and I'm tracking down this issue.

The car does smell ridiculously rich even for the 23x/24x cam, so it could possibly be an awful tune. Or it wasn't tuned at all

230 is operating oil temp. It will alarm at 300 deg.

I cut the ground wire off my temp sensor and ran a separate lead from the sensor to the hood strut ground bolt, that fixed my fluctuation and bad reading problems.

230 is normal oil temp?? idk bout that... mine and my friends V both average 200-212 for oil temp around town.. I just got done with a 500miles trip on interstate and never saw about 218* for oil temp. only time ive ever seen 230+ for oil temp is when im beating the **** out of the car then sit in the drivethrough getting food on a hot day.

Mine goes to 230 and stays put unless I am really ******* it, it might go up a few deg.

so more than likely its just a grounding issue and if i fix that it should be fine.
also kinda off topic of this thread but my speedo has stop working but everything else in the gauge cluster continues to work and i replace the vehicle speed sensor on the tranny twice and still had no luck with fixing it any suggestion

Be sure that you don't have the speedo pigtail mixed up with the other one that is identical on that side of the trans. I made that mistake when I put the motor back in my car.

If it was i didn't notice because i wasn't paying attention to any temps until i did the water pump. I know when i first got the car i drove it during the summer at the beach and it read 300 soo i'm sure it was probably close to as high as that. I put a washer in between the ground and the car and it seemed to have helped. im gonna try moving it to under the hood strut though since most seem to think the helped the best

230 is not cause for alarm in oil temps. I'd say ideal is around 215, but 230 is not excessive. These sensors aren't 100% accurate anyway.
