Default click, no start...(intermittent)

07 V
Car has been starting fine, but i've known my battery is on its last leg. Today following a drive, I hit the key at get the loud click from the starter but nothing else, until I turn the key back and sorta unclicks. (Multiple times)
Install brand new battery.
Turn key, same exact ****...
Tap on starter, same...
Clutch start car and drive home.
Search the forums....looking at the little weather connector..(ACDelco #PT170, 12101763) Yeah mine is already superglued together. Not finding much else....
I go back out hit the key and she fires right up, twice. Damn my car fixed itself!!!!Gotta love it..... Ugh the impending doom of intermittent failures.
Need some help with the simple tests. I know I hit the keyless when I got home (lock then unlock later, not sure if I tried that earlier).

Did you fully inspect all wires going to the starter or just quickly check the solenoid wire? Your problem sounds exactly like a burnt starter connection.

The pinion gear works, but probably given the yr of your car your starter needs to be changed. The brushes are not touching the starter armature so its not cranking...

You may buy a new starter but get the one that has a stud on the back rather than the plug. Makes your life much better in the long run...

I pulled the starter back when I did my motor mounts...the little wires plastic terminal sorta fell apart. I just superglued it together and stuck it back in a with a dab of rtv. (Had I known about the replacement pigtail I would have done that)
What do you mean burnt connection?

Naf....is that starter a certain brand (msd) or a particular year, different model?

Replace the pigtail before you buy a new starter. Make sure to protect it from any heat.

Do away with the pigtail and put a solenoid on it that uses a ring terminal like every other LS powered car GM made.

OP, I agree with this ls1247. I had the same issue that you are speaking of. Checked starter relay, starter fuse, clutch pedal position switch, just to make sure. Took my battery in to get tested, they said it was fine, and I had them throw it on the charger for me. Went to pick it up, they told me it was done for, and pick up a new one. Put the new one in, and still no juice. Turned out that the starter ended up being bad. Replaced it with one from a Silverado. Been trucking along for the past month without a hitch.

The tooth count on the starter drive between a silverado and ctsv are not the same. There may or may not be flywheel engagement issues.

I took my starter to an auto electric shop and they had a conventional ring terminal solenoid that fit my factory starter on the shelf. They charged $80 to go through the starter, freshen it up and replace the solenoid.

Besides auto electric, what other type name would this kind of shop have? Having a starter rebuilt seems foreign these days...lol, I don't know where to look!

Edit: in the yellowpages:auto, automotive, automobile electric service... Or starter, alternator generator repair

The place I go to, which has been in business 70 years, is literally called "the generator shop". They're out there but getting hard to find.

Good Luck!

Since you're getting a click I would be more inclined to think it's a bad spot on the starter.

Correct. That bad spot is more than likely the solenoid or the wires leading to it but while its off the car, have the whole thing checked out by someone who knows what they're doing.

So far there has not been another single no start. I have not pulled the starter yet. I pulled the boot of the battery (+) terminal cable, and there was a good bit of corrosion in there, but not necessarily on the contact surfaces.
The wiring to the starter all looks intact. The (+) cable at the starter was melted pretty good back when I did my motor mounts. I slathered on a thick coat of rtv silicone and its holding up perfectly thus far.
I'll call some shops today for prices and turnaround time. Then pull it off in the next day or so.

I checked the tooth count on the spare flywheel (LS7) and the 4L60E flexplate. Both are 168 tooth. Either way it worked for me, and countless others.

It would start fine, then one day i would get a click and nothing, but the n it would start after i tried it again then it would be fine for a week or 2.. Finally it stopped starting all together and it ended up being the starter was finally toast

My problem only started after it got cold, and my car is garage kept so its not like its super cold in there compared to outside, but it was still cold enough to take out my tired 100k mile starter

Mine is at a bit over 100k like 100,430 or so... i used to have a really high compression setup on the car before my 418 went in... the heads i was using were cut so much the ls6 intake would rock on the heads because it was touching the bottom of the valley, so the ls6 intake had to be ground down to be able to bolt to the heads lol... cranking compression was 235-240 in each cylinder and it was tunned on straight vp 100... i think that's what killed mine and the cold finished it off this winter
