Default LS9 Clutch Failure

One of the disks exploded, downshifted to 3rd to make a pass on the freeway and BOOM.

Does anyone have any details about our bellhousing, I'd really like to buy an SFI bellhousing at this point. I've heard our bellhousing is deeper? But I'm pretty sure we share an input shaft with the GTO? Is there bellhousing also deeper?

Thats it? I would suspect improper installation, or a bearing issue...

Is the bell housing toasted too?

Man am I glad I never dealt with the his clutch. I understand that it is running just fine in many vehicles and all that is well and good. But I see and hear wayyyyy too much about them failing. At a frequency higher that any other clutch. Sucks OP.

And naf if there was a bearing issue it would still be showing itself. So Op be sure to check our trans. As for the improper install that's a load. How? If it was installed wrong it would have had problems from mile one.

The bellhousing has some minor damage from the shrapnel, I've seen people fix and run worse. I would like to upgrade at this point though. Transmission survived, there is a little up and down play in the input shaft that's new, it's not too severe but I'll have to check what spec is.

I am in charge of maintenance for trucks. I have seen and heard it all...

It could have been a misalignment of the center disc during installation. Or just a defective clutch disc. The slave could have been pressing on the clutch fingers even though there was no pressure from the master cylinder.

That sucks... What are you going back with and think a bellhousing blanket would fit?

I've purchased a Centerforce DYAD, I'm trying to figure out what slave cylinder I need. Presumably LS7? I'm not in love with the idea of blanket on a daily driver.

If it wasn't aligned it would not have slid together. Like, ever. And while a bearing and slave could cause issues I'd expect the clutch to catch fire before it detonated like his. So this I'm 99% sure is manufacture defect.

B-Ruck has broken multiple twin disc clutches, but you can't consider his car normal, so I wouldn't count those entirely.

This is true, the ZR-1 guys have more than a couple of pictures that look a lot like mine.

Two LS9's and the Marcel spring on an RPS Street twin. Basically my RPS was one launch away from looking like this.

I havent heard from fuzzy since his ban from ls1tech...

I have seen first hand what a bad input bearing would do to a clutch.

It could happen, especially with a multi plate clutch
