Default Calling all axle experts

hey guys, I'm having axle seal problems after replacing my diff cover. The car that I bought had a broken bolt in the diff on the cover side. I replaced the cover, gasket and bought two new axle seals. The driver side axle has a lot of side to side play and seems like it does not go into the diff as far as the passenger side. It alsi popped the metal cover off the axle seal causing it to leak. I thought that it was a defective seal so I changed it again and the same thing happen just going down the road. I'm wondering if I need to hammer my axle in farther? Does anyone have a pic of what their driver side axle looks like when it's in the diff?

I no longer have the diff in the car, so I can't get any measurements. However, there's some discussion of how big that gap is supposed to be in this thread. I posted a pic in post #24 and you can see there's a pretty good sized gap between the inner CV and the diff housing.

Do the internal parts of the differential suppose to move around?
My differential carrier housing moves around a bit. When the axle is out it dosent line up with the axle seal. There is nothing holding it so the axle lines it up when I install it. Is this normal or is it suppose to be centered and not move? Im talking about number 19 on the diagram...

Sounds to me like the bearing(s) (#18) is/are shot.

Do I need any special tools to replace them?

It's easy to open the case from a rear diff and common to pull it apart to find the issue on it!

You need inner and outer bearing pullers, to get them apart!

Pulled it apart today. Looks like the passenger side bearing is bad. Does anyone know the part number?
