Default Buying a gen 1 cts v help****

Ok so the gen 1 cts v has been my dream car for a while and the wife is finally letting me get one because we have a baby coming and I need a 4 dr car. Everything I'm finding around me is 150 to 170,000 miles and around 10k. My neighbor had one when I was in high school and knew I had to have one. I'm knew to cadillac but not knew to being a gear head. I do all my own work and have built everything from choppers to rat rods to race cars.

To make a long story longer I want to make sure I'm not getting into a problem car and what the normal troublesome issues are to look at when I go to test drive. There are 4 or 5 around me from 8 to 10k any advice is much appreciated.

thanks in advance,

It's a 10+ year old car, they all have problems. That said it would be a cold day before a lot of us gave up a v1. All the drive line mounts, clutch are no brainers that will need love. Radiator goes every few years, diffs pop if your being stupid.....

If your buying it with the intention to mod it when things break its fine as your waiting for the excuse.

Lon story short, plan on dumping a few grand in a car with that many miles (and sooner than you think)unless things have already been done.

I'm going to daily drive it and mod as I go. I'm also working on a 68 c10 with a 6.0 that will most likely be a daily as well. Big things to come for the V. The car is really clean looks well taken care of.

If you're looking for a car to do clutch dump burnouts or no lift shifting, you won't like this car cause it doesn't like doing these things. Other than that, it can be a great car but it'll have many of the same common problems other cars of this age and miles will have.

I'm not concerned with burnouts and clutch dumps. I want a car i can drive comfortably with decent hp. That sounds good looks good and can have a car seat in it.

Make SURE you have resources and skills to handle this QUICKLY. I can easily envision times when both your C10 and your V1 will be down...I've owned both. Bigger issue than "Can I fix it?" is "Can I fix one faster than the wife loses patience?" If you generate the perception of two toys or one toy plus a money pit, you'll be fighting an uphill battle with the wife/mommy from moment one. Her patience WILL wane. You're on the right track with a four door, just be realistic. These are great cars and reliable for what they are but 170k is a lot and these still ain't Accords or Camrys.

That one in Charlotte you linked is very clean. If you're going to buy one, that's an awesome example for the price. The only big ticket item I'd really question on it is the transmission. I would imagine it's pretty worn--bearings and synchros being the most noticeable. It also didn't mention motor mounts, but I'd assume that with the rest of the mods on the car they've been addressed.

Thanks so much for the heads up. I think I'm going to go get it. I'm a snap on dealer for my area so I get the hookup on parts

The CTS-V1 is a nodders wet dream.

My advice, put in for overtime to pay for the mods and get ready for your wife to refer to it as the "other woman".
