Default Custom 4” intake for MP122H

Well I was finally able to get the ball rolling on the intake. Still working on my aluminum TIG welding though. I’ve had my TIG for a while but I don’t get to use it near enough, especially on aluminum. Hopefully I can change that and get some more seat time at the welding bench

I forgot to add pics of the stock MAF housing vs the new 4” housing and card MAF. I would think this would be benificial for any car making some decent power. Then there is the new 4” housing vs the stock maggie tube and a pic of the old MAF housing sitting inside of the new 4” MAF housing. I’m hoping this lets that old maggie breathe a lot better.

Impressive use of the pie cuts to create such a complex form - even more impressive considering you said it's your first time doing the pie cuts!

What's the source of the 4" MAF?

Thanks! I tried to build an intake my own way and I wasn't successful with that at all haha. After watching the fabrication series on youtube I had a pretty good understanding of how they did it so I thought I would give it a try.

The 4" housing is an Airaid 160-643. I used it just because it fit the Volant filter I already had and it has a nice bell mouth for better flow into the intake. The MAF itself is GM part number 15865791. Its the same as the LS7 MAF but they used that part number in all kinds of stuff. I pulled mine out of a fairly new HHR at the you pull salvage.

Nice job man! Looks like you definitely got to spend some time at the welding bench

Yeah it was right around 8-9 hours from the first cut to tightening the clamps to install it. Not too bad for a days work.

Ahhh, interesting. I picked up some 4" intake pieces in the classifieds here a while back, which included the adapter to keep the original MAF. Might have to see about going 4" all the way.

What do you do about the MAF transfer function? I don't know enough about HPTuners or EFI Live, but since it's a factory MAF, can a tuner just import the transfer function from the factory tune for whatever vehicle the MAF is used on?

Honestly I am clueless about the tuning aspect of it. I know a lot of people have done it and say they just need to be scaled since they can read more air flow. That's about as much as I know lol I'm hoping the tuner knows more about it than I do. I do know my car doesn't like this MAF right now. It will idle but that's it. And without a MAF it goes into limp mode and actually turns off the fuel pump after a couple minutes.

So, if you do the swap, have a way to trailer it to the tuner or do the swap in his parking lot.

That would be a hell of a good start and probably even be enough to drive to a tuner but not exactly a drop into the map and go kind of thing. The filter end and the rest of the path do affect it enough to need some more tweaks. I’ve found this out the hard way before.

If/when I get around to doing this, I would most likely just build everything at home, but drive to the tuner with the existing setup. He could then install the 4" setup (should only take a few minutes to swap out) and tune it.

The connectors are different but the pins in the stock MAF connector are the same as the new MAF connector. You can either get an adapter harness to make it plug and play or just move the pins from the old connector to the new one and change the wiring as necessary. I chose the latter just because it looks better.

I’ve got the original Magnuson bar. It’s off just to get refinished. I’m not impressed with how it’s made though so I’ll probably end up building my own. Thanks for the offer though.

The V2 bar works also, is pretty sweet looking and cheap. Have to trim a length of the under hood skin.

Bumping this back up to remind myself that the next time I hit the u-pull-it yard I need to look for one of the slot MAFs and the associated harness.

FYI V2 bar works without modification of hood (been running on my car for a while now). It is a pain in the butt for negative battery terminal access unless you clearance the stand off in that area though.
