MSD 6010 users. Whats your timing set at?

I have a carbed 6.0 with L92 heads and a comp cam. What custom tune are you guys running? I am ditching the chips that it comes with. Whats your initial timing set at? And your final timing? Thanks fellas.

tennerv8 09-07-2010 10:56 AM

After 3000 rpms i have 32 degrees of timing which seems to work for me. I have 28 degrees at idle. I have no map table yet as i want to wait until I get the timing set. I think 28 degrees at idle is too much timing. What are you carb guys running for timing at idle?

I also have a carbed 6.0 with L92 heads in my '34 Ford street rod. I am running very close to what yours is at present. Mine is at 12* at 0 RPM (cranking speed), 28* at 850 RPM (idle ) and then 32* at 2800 RPM, if I remember correctly. I let mine go on to *34 up at 6000 and above. In my opinion, how quick you bring it in depends a lot on the weight of the car, the gear ratio, the cam and the torque convertor. But opinions are like belly buttons....everybody has one, LOL.

The engine is in a '91 s10 so its pretty light. So you think this curve is okay? I am running a Comp Cams XR281HR.

I am no expert by any stretch, but I wouldn't be afraid to try it there. Like anything that isn't familiar ground to you, I would keep checking plugs, and listen for signs of detonation. A lot of guys on here freak out when anyone mentions putting some timing in an LS motor but when you think about it, the combustion chambers are very similar to whats available for just about any other engine from the after market. If you don't try different things, how are you going to know what the engine likes, or for that matter, be faster than your opponent? For what it's worth, your cam is bigger than mine and if you have any kind of decent convertor, the little truck should run hard. My cam is only 222-234 @ .050. It's on a 112* lobe angle and is installed at 107* intake C/L. I have a Vigilante lockup convertor that will flash to about 3200RPM and I leave at about 1600 RPM off the footbrake. THIS IS A STREET CAR. I started out with 12* at 0 RPM - 22* at 850 - 28* at 1700 - 29* at4300 - and 34* at 6000. I just recently changed it to the specs similar to yours and so far it seems to be working really well. So far I,ve been mostly running a vacuum secondary 750. With the large L92 ports and the huge plenum in the GM single plane, I'm having trouble getting enough signal to my double pumper to get it to work properly at the low RPM's when I smack it. If you run a 4-5000 RPM convertor, it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck, RON

I have mine set at18* initaial from 0-1000rpm, then ranping up to 36*, all in at 2000rpm, then flat at 36* all the way. my 6.0L/L92 has 9.6:1 compression, and a comp 227/235 cam. my car trapped 121 last time out
My next timing experiment is to run 18 initial and have it go to 36* at 750rpm. I idle the engine at 850-900. I beleive the engine will like this as the compression is too low for the cam.

Think mine is at 24 at 0*-1000, then i ramp it up quick to 33 in by 3000, think i am going back to 36 total, seems like it enjoyed more timing, but i need to get some dyno time in to make sure i have data to back it up.

chris-m 09-13-2010 04:38 AM

mine is similar but i am on 95 octane uk supermarket fuel and we found detonation above 34 degrees at the top end so that was my limit.
15deg cranking, 18 at idle (plus upto 10degress with vac advance) and then no more than 34 at WOT or above 3000rpm. works well with a 750cfm mech secondary carb.

it is quite lively! on a recent trackday it was as quick as a fairly new Ferrari 430 and a Ferrari CS. not bad for a £3k LS6 and a carb :drive:

I have 5.3 all stock, Running

12* start up, 18* idle: 800rpm, 29* all in by 3000.

410 gears with a 700r4

Car is quick and pretty fast :)

Now im wondering if 28 degrees at idle is to much?

xx_ED_xx 09-14-2010 02:36 AM

Hmm i cant remember what mine is, I am running an 8.1 with one of these boxes

An 8.1 huh? And it works fine with the msd box? Thats pretty cool!

mine is somewhere near that while idling with the vac advance putting +10 deg into the basic map, idles well.

I dont think its bad. In fact it will give it great throttle response, and if you have a big cam in it, this will regain some of the lost torque below where the cam is "happy"
I am going to try as much timing as mine will handle at idle and through the lower rpms. I am certain 36* is all it wants above 3500rpm

yes i had to swap wires on the cam and crank sensor and extended the cam sensor harness and that was about it. I plan on using it on my 454 based motor as well when the 8.1 comes out. chevy made a coil per cylinder 454 very breifly so you can buy the parts to convert gen 6 big blocks to coil per cylinder :)
