Default heads and cam combo for stock lq4

im new to the ls world. i have a 96 s10 with a bone stock lq4 with edelbrock intake and proform 750 race carb and msd-6010. Need to know what cam makes good power and sounds good? stick with the stock 317 heads and do work to them or buy some different heads? first pass down the track it went 12.53, second pass 12.38. Its not gonna be a daily driver but i do wanna be able to get in it and drive it to the track which is about 30 miles away. Any help from the ls gurus would be appreciated im totally clueless on this stuff.

This is my stock LQ4 with stock heads milled .030 and i touched them up a bit with my carbides, not much though with a Trex cam, this was all motor spinning a bit and went 7.2 @ 97 MPH 1.6 60 foot, that is a low 11 second pass in the 1/4. I will be switching to milled and ported 243s to aim for a 6 second pass and 10s all motor in the 1/4, but this is just a general idea for you. 1 chamber flowmasters for exhaust, dual 3 inch.

What's the weight on your car? About how much did u invest on doing head work? I wanna do something to bump the compression up a bit.

Car should be about 3200 with out mi big *** and 3500 with. Head work at my local machine shop was 220$ for the milling and valve job. I did the grinding o the heads, but i didnt do much, had it all dont in about 6 hours and that means i didnt do much other than clean them up.

i have a 92 s10 and i am in the same boat as you are. what does your truck weigh? full interior? reg cab or ext? headers? trans/converter? If it were me i would stick with the 317 heads since you already have an intake to fit those heads. I would buy a nice tapered carb spacer and put a cam and springs in it. Depending on the cam you may have to flycut the pistons but that's really no big deal. If you have to take the heads off i would have them milled .030 to bump the compression up around 10:1 which is still fairly conservative for pump gas (93). If you wanted new heads like a set of l92 heads you would have to change your intake, rockers. The l92 heads flow pretty well and really make some power and they are half the cost of some aftermarket heads. The carb intakes like a tight lsa of something in the range of 108-112. Anything you can do to the intake side, exhaust, compression and camshaft will net you the most gains. although if you have a small converter it will run like a pig
