For a portable environment, I would prefer a USB connection.

For a permanent environment (mounted in place to not be moved, or stationary with no intentional movement) I would rather have a serial connection. on these boxes, they went with enough processor to control what the box does, and that is it. It does not need massively fast connections, nor a massively fast processor for what it is doing.

Their choice of a connection is just fine. Just spend $11 for a USB to Serial cable from ebay and while you buy one, grab an extra one for a spare. I ordered 2 for a friend and someone else bought them in half a heartbeat. they are cheap enough and easy to setup if you are connected to the internet when you plug it in.
