MSD is not going out of business. They are restructuring their debt that was acquired with the acquisition of Edge and Superchips (Powertec).
Given that the economy took a huge dump and then Edge was hit with a nearly $1M fine from the federal government for the diesel DFP delete product.
Of the three companies in that group, MSD has been carrying the debt of the other two. This was a way to restructure the debt and carry on.
You will still be able to get products, service, boxes and distributors rebuilt etc. The ProMag product is still alive and dominating the NHRA pro fuel pits. RacPak is still alive and kicking and still a viable brand for those who want the premium data logging product. They will be around for a long time to come.

Alas, that is to be expected. Any company, in the modern era, requiring you to buy an antiquated USB-UART bridge device (dongle USB laptop thingy ) just to connect to any reasonably modern computer, is doomed

I gladly would have paid an extra $10 to get bluetooth or even wifi in the box. I even would have paid another $4 on top of that to get a smart phone app to run the box.
Maybe there was some sort of interference they were worried about, but for the most part I bet they went serial just due to lack of effort. Hell, every my kids game boys had wireless links for years now.

Fixed it for you. Your welcome.
I just got my first Windows 8 Laptop. No other laptop I have owned had Bluetooth. I certainly don't want to be trying to tune my car on the tiny screen on my phone. Would Bluetooth be a good added feature? Sure, but I would not want to pay too much extra for it. Somebody who does not have a state of the art Laptop with Bluetooth would not want to pay any extra for it.

Anyway. Sounds like we will still have support from MSD For carb setups. I agree that the setup could be better. I had to buy an adapter and remove a pin to make mine work. Trying to tell my dad that ls motors are the way to go. Sbc guy. With out hours of internet research he would never figure it out . Im sold on ls motors. Besides MSD im kind of suprised that nobody else is making a setup to run a ls motor with a carb.

What we are dealing with here is an RS-232 to USB situation. Everyone who connects a laptop to an MSD unit is going to use the USB port on the laptop, Via an adapter dongle (no other choice).
Do you leave your dongle attached to the MSD while driving ?? why would you need the jackscrews that attach it and make it more secure (sockets) than USB otherwise ??
Holley EFI (Dominator and HP) units have USB connection. Seems to work well for them. They have a screw in sealed USB connector.

Chapter 11 is more or less consolidation of debt and re-financing without losing the company. By filing for court ordered restructuring, they get a stay of seizure against the debt holders.
Chapter 7 is where they file bankruptcy and all debt is wiped out, but in a corporate situation, it usually means the end of the company because most judges order the company's assets liquidated and the proceeds from the sales gets distributed to the debt holders equally, or percentage based.
