Default Alternator wiring question

So I have a 98 LS1 engine with the 4 pin alt, not sure if this is even the correct alt for my car but it came with the engine and it fits. Anyway ordered a new connector for it since I didnt have one and it has 1 wire coming off it, where does this wire connect to ? I have read threads saying it's not needed, have read threads saying it gets 12 volts, have read threads saying it gets a resistor. I'm lost ! All I know is I have a wire going from the alt stud to the battery and the voltage reads 12 key on and 12 running so I'm guessing I need that wire to connect to something. Please help.

I use a 12V idiot light. Then no resistor needed. Just run the wire from alt to one side of light and other to ground IIRC

Works great, as my alt went out the other day, wouldn't have known if not for light
