Default LQ4, LQ9 or LY6?

So I have been lurking around for a while and doing some reading about other peoples build combos. I'm trying to decide what type of 6.0 LS I should use as a basis for an LS swap into my 68 chevelle. I want to do a cam swap, carbureted build using a salvage yard sourced engine. I'm looking to make this car a fast street strip deal with some type of automatic OD trans. I read Speedtigger's (sp?) build thread and am impressed with the results, but I really don't want to swap heads or buy expensive valvetrain parts. I would prefer a simple cam, valve spring/ pushrod upgrade. I read about people using stock LY6's and running mid 12's and it makes we wonder what a cam change would do to a LY6 out put. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Any of those engines can accomplish your goals if your combo is optimized. I was stunned when I first drove my car even in its mildest iteration.

Any of the short blocks will work, LQ9 will have more compression. From there you only need the heads to work for you. A L92/LY6 set of heads on any of those with a custom spec cam will absolutely work wonders for you.

LQ4 w/ LS3 heads here (basically a LY6). I had the heads shaved .050 to get the compression up (10.5:1-ish) and added a cam...been 11.3's with a bad converter. Still dialing in.
Speedtigger has his dialed in and fine tuned....very meticulous and knows his combo very well.
There are a few other guys who are running great and have their $hit together also, not to leave them out...

Yea, basically look for any three of those blocks, which ever one you get the best deal on I'd say. You can take a look at my signature below and see what my LQ4 has done in my car.

Cant remember exactly what I paid for everything but below are my guesstimates:

Bought a 2005 LQ4 with no intake, no computer and no harness $700
Bought used set of 799 heads(to boost compression about 10.2-1. $400ish
MSD 6010 ignition box $400
Pacesetter Fbody headers $400
Custom Ultradyne Cam $450
Brian Tooley New springs, lifters, pushrods $550
Vic Jr intake $300

So for about $3000 I got a 3200lb car with me in it to go 11.20's. I really dont think you can beat a deal like that.
