As a side note, a full plug and play microsquirt kit can be had for $650 from the right dealer, which is the same price as a stand-alone harness for the stock ECU. You get 2-step, launch control, anti-lag, flex fuel, self-tuning capability, very detailed datalogging, and dozens of other features that the stock ECU or the MSD could only dream of.
There are always options out there to go very far on a budget.

Depends totally on what you are starting with and where you want to go with it. Is it a bare long/shortblock ? Did you get the stock ECU and wiring harness with it ? You can sell those for $500 and be most of the way to a carb setup.
Also, what if you dont want a DBW throttle due to swap preferences ? Your pullout ECU/harness will not be much good to you.
And with that microsquirt, You also get batch fire injection, waste spark, and no stepper IAC control. Many would consider that a downgrade from a stock ECU. An MS3 ($1000+) is more comparative to the stock GM ecu capabilities,

Like I said carb was much cheaper in my case. Not even close. Don't think I'm insane. Maybe I am for getting back in this discussion.
I looked into microsquirt. I have multiple engineering degrees and program real time stuff for a living. The learning curve on microsquirt was way more than I was willing to invest. Not sure that is such a good example for a cost effective solution.
I'm with you 100% on diy harnesses. The money people drop on those amazes me.

DBW? The large majority of LS engines from 99-04 were DBC. Use one of those. Your stock pedal will work fine with a 99-04 truck throttle cable as well.
MS3 isn't $1000+. An MS3 gold box plug and play from someone like Shannon Taylor is ~$1000.
A regular MS3 box with an 8 foot DIY harness is ~$600. Grab yourself a throw-away harness and cut the connectors off. In a few hours you have yourself an MS3 for the price of a plug and play micro, and its 10x as capable as the stock ECU could ever dream of being. None of the drawbacks of the micro.

411 PCMs pop up in the classifieds on this site for $50 quite a bit. Harnesses are $75-125 everywhere, especially this harness/PCM combo out of a truck.
Craigslist and the LSX facebook groups see dozens of these a week pass through for $125-175 for harness/ECU.

I didnt see a link in there. I'm serious, I have a project right now that could use it. We have been debating which way to go, But the cost of the stock stuff has been the tipping point. If I can get the ecu/harness for $175, that will be the deciding factor.
Not trying to get into a **** match either.

Its seriously worth joining Facebook just for the LSX classified pages.
These are just the ones I found at a quick 2 minute glance, and only the ones posted in the last 2 weeks that are within a couple of hours drive from me. There are hundreds of harness/ECU combinations for sale on the some of the LSX facebook groups right now.
There are 5 or so local to me on craigslist.
Search for 411 in the classified section of this site. One gets posted about every month for ~50 bucks.

What budget are you working with?
I've used the Quickfuel Slayer 750 a few times on street cars and loved it. Its around $300. It is my go-to for a budget 750 CFM carb. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than that on an LQ4, especially if you plan on a decent cam.

Quit hijacking your own thread!
$500 is what I paid for my classic DP.
If I were to replace it I would get the QF SS. It has a choke and every orifice is drilled and tapped, you can tune everything
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/qft-ss-750/overview/
For the same price you can get an ultra DP
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/h...50bk/overview/
can't go wrong with either. Pick the color you like or just flip a coin.

Runs phenomenally on my 2500# manual trans car. I have the GMPP single plane cause that is what GM shipped with the crate LS2. It pulls cleanly in 4th gear from 1000 RPM

Well, I found a 411/Truck harness for $200. Am going to try the repin/rework route and see just how this works. Not planning on dropping $750 on HPtuners right away, Guess I will have to pay a guy (hopefully local) to do the basics just so it will run.
Car in my sig has had, On it - MSD 6010/Edelbrock perf and carb, Ms2 megasquirt, And Holley HP unit. Excited to try out the stock ECM route on this next car....
Any tips ? Probably wrong forum for that huh haha
