Resistors are not rated in volts. Its a combination of ohms (resistance), watts (for power handling capacity) and tolerance for accuracy on the specified resistance. I think you are looking for a "pull up" resistor but I don't know the value you need. My guess - please don't take this with 100 percent certainty - would be 4700 ohms in a half watt or larger size for power handling. Go larger on the wattage here if you must compromise. Somebody around here will know better for certain exactly what you need. I order piece parts like this from Mouser Electronics or Digi-Key although I do have a local fellow with a brick and mortar store for some of these sorts of things. Without Radio Shack, its the Internet or nothing for little things like this. Rick |

This is so that the bulb burning out does not prevent current flow and therefore alternator excitation. The resistor should be equivalent to a 3-4 watt bulb. Using Ohms law, we can use the Electrical Wheel of Doom from Part 1 to calculate the required value of the resistor as R = V^2 / Watts. In this case R = (14v*14v) / 4W = 49 Ohms. So a 50 Ohm resistor will do. |
