10 bolt vs 12 bolt??
I'm looking into getting a 2001/2002 camaro ss/Z28 and have heard alot of people talk about 10 bolt and 12 bolt cars
This may sound like a dumb question...
What exactly is a 10 bolt camaro vs a 12 bolt camaro?

10 and 12 bolts refer to the number of bolts holding the ring gear to the differential. i cant remember exactly but the only 12 bolt f-bods were 1st gen. perhaps pre '74 second gen, i dunno.
12 bolts are generally considered to be stronger rear ends though an 8.5 10 bolt is just as strong. the bigger the gear the stronger it is.
our factory 10 bolt have 7.625" gears
earlier 10 bolts used 8.2" gears
strong 10 bolts use 8.5" gears
12 bolts use 8.8" gears
Fords have and 8.8 and the ever popular 9" gear
Dana 60 use humungous 9.75" gears
but considering a fourth gens rear suspension, finding an original 12 bolt or 8.5 10 bolt and putting it on a 4th gen would require alot of fab work. most aftermarket companies have already done the hard stuff and sell 12 bolts ready to bolt into a 4th gen. as well as ford 9" and Dana 60 versions.
personally i feel the 9" ford is best for most high horsepower situations and a dana 60 is serious overkill that does nothing but rob useful power and add weight.
