Default Noob performance questions about 2002 Camaro Z28

Hi, I'm new to the LS world and was thinking about doing a LS swap into a mustang but I've found a 2002 Camaro Z28 locally with only 55k miles.
Its a 1 owner 6 speed in mint condition and I'm just trying to get everyones overall opinion on these cars.
What little I have heard about them is weak rear ends and an engine compartment thats a pain to work in.
What I'd like to hear from people is: Are they fun cars? How hard is it to mod them to go say low 11's? Is the 6 speed and rearend reliable for this type of performance?
Thanks in advance

-They are a blast, I drive the car pictured in my sig 200 miles a week and love every mile.
-Low 11's are not that hard to get. Just do some reading on some of the setups that some guys have on here that run around those times.
-The 10 bolt rear will not last very long through a 6 speed if you really hammer on it. However, the T56 itself is a pretty tough unit though.

^What he said.
So are you wanting to swap the motor and trans from that Camaro into a Mustang? Or are you now thinking about just buying the Camaro and building that for 11's?
The t56 is plenty strong to withstand 11's. What you heard about the rears is correct.
Getting into the 11's with an Ls1 should be easy enough. Get yourself a good CAI, a nice cam, some head work, get a good tune, and maybe open up that ls6 intake some or swap it out for a FAST product and you should be there.

I was originally looking at doing a JY LS swap into a mustang and then found this Camaro and thought it might be better to go this route.
Thanks for the replies so far

The rear will last a lot longer if you do not run drag radials. Even sticking with the stock gears will help. While it's not as bulletproof as the Mustangs 8.8, it's not just going to shatter -- unless you put sticky tires on it.

11's are bolt-ons and a cam away.

I just bought my third LS1 Camaro, if that means anything about their fun-factor

Go for the Z you wont regret it. 2002 has all the upgraded parts apposed to 98-00 cars. It will be much more fun, faster, and better on gas than the Mustang. Keep the rear axle as is unless you break it then go for a 12 bolt or nine inch. I never ran my 02 Z28 with drag radials but I sure as hell got on that car a lot, banged the gears, wheel hoped it with the 295/35/18 tires every time in second and it never blew. I did have a TA Performance Girdle on the stock rear with Royal Purple.

Do you own the 'Stang already? Is the motor blown up? I'm thinking a 5.3 junkyard takeout with some head work, headers, and a cam into a car you already have would be the cheap way into the 11s

I've loved my 02 SS ever since I purchased it two years ago. The car is definitely a blast to drive.
