Default 2002 SOM Z/28 Build Thread

I orignally bought this car in September of 2012 as I have always been a large fan of sunset orange metallic and this one was had low miles was stock other than a welded in flow master and some drilled and slotted rotors and has one previous owner. After a while I was bored with f body's again and considered selling, but after seeing alot of nice cars and getting tired of the time wasters and tire kickers I decided that it was time to build the car that I wanted.

This isn't my first f body however I am hoping it will be the best.

Now on to the car it is a 2002 SOM Z/28 1SC. The only options the car has are ebony leather and the monsoon radio. It has no rear defrost, traction control, cruise control, fog lights, has manual seats, and according to compnine it is a pretty rare car.

The first round of mods was a good start and consisted of
1 7/8 KOOKS RACE Headers
KOOKS y pipe
Powerbond 25% under drive pulley
ARP Crank bolt
Raptor blue LED shift light mounted in the ac vent
SLP Lid (picked up used and painted soon to be replaced with something better, open to suggestions)
General maintence items

I also added somethings from past cars I had these included
OE Wheels 17x9.5 C5 Replicas in Gunmetal
SLP Performance mats in ebony
Hurst Chrome Stick for the factory hurst base
DDM 10K HID Kit
I also added stainless Camaro rear fill ins from emblem pros.

This round of mods kept me at bay for a while until the factory clutch hydraulics started to give me problems so I then added a tick performance adjustable clutch master cylinder. I recommend this mod be on everyone's list.

Then I just enjoyed the car for several months but I had a texas speed tsunami cam kit that I had purchased shortly after buying the car and it was time to put it to good use.

This round of mods include
Texas speed Tsunami cam kit with upgraded .675 lift spring
Melling High Flow oil pump
Cloyes replacement timing set
SLP 160 thermostat
Replacement a/c idler and tensioner
All required gaskets
Midwest Chassis double adjustable lca
Midwest Chassis tubular k member
Viking double adjustable front coilovers with 300lb springs
BMR rear 1.25 lowering springs
Racetronix 255 fuel pump with hotwire kit
T/A Aluminum rear girdle
SLP skip shift elimanator
Texas Speed mail order tune

Car is currently in shop for the upgrades will post pics and updates as they happen. Hoping to have the car back in time for Grand Run in Pigeon Forge, Tn in april.

I am looking to upgrade my interior and gauge cluster lights to led. Can anyone provide me detailed part numbers for everything? I have tried the search but have seen a few different part numbers mentioned and I wanna be sure to get it right.

Nice, deliberate progression of mods. I'm also a sucker for the hardtops!

Update: Got the car back last weekend and so far am very impressed. the midwest chassis parts all fit and look great. The viking coilovers ride awesome and are simple to adjust. The base tune from texas speed and for the most part is spot on. I have to adjust the idle screw just a tad to see if a retune will be required for cold idle. The power range on the tsunami seems to be great for mid to upper range.

Default clutch suggestions

I suggest the Monster stage 3. Not a bad review in sight... I love how mine feels and performs. McLeod would be my second choice.

Man my car is about the Pontiac twin of yours. 02 SOM T/A, mirrored inserts, Kooks 1 7/8, Tick mc, BMR springs, MS3 cam etc.

I even did the mods in the same order haha. Biggest differences is my cam is a little smaller, koni shocks and I'm using a NX 100 shot.

Keep us updated and post some timeslips if you get to the track.

Just a small update on the car as I have been slowly collecting parts.

I purchased a Midwest chassis body mount torque arm and cross member with driveshaft safety loop, also plan on purchasing their on car adjustable pan hard and viking rear shocks to finish out the full suspension hopefully within the next month.

I have also collected some parts for appearance mods. I purchased one of the last SLP Bowtie grilles anyone had and stock and received Emblem Pros 5th Gen Z/28 style emblems.

This winter will also be installing a set of Ford red top injectors I bought a while back as well as a little more tuning.

good looking car and mods. If you're after the best performance possible, the next step would be a FAST, getting rid of the HEAVY c5 wheels and a true duals or 4" catback. i would add a set of gears to the list as well

Yea I actually have a 4.10 gear to install to get me buy for a while until funds allow for a 12 bolt. As for exhaust I do look the 4" Mufflex systems, but not sure I want it that loud all the time so I may have to go with a catback and a cutout. I am in the market for a drag pack but the only thing I have decided for sure is that I want a 17/15 combo the rest is a toss up for either Darkstars or black RTS. Thanks for the compliments and advice its always good to hear other opinions.

It runs pretty decent with the initial tune. As far as idle goes its good. It does need a little more work in the area if coming to a stop as sometimes it wants to surge a little. I am going to send the PCM back in soon for the new injectors and gear so hopefully its spot on after that.

No real update here but I did get my new emblems on. They are from Emblem Pros and are the 5th Z/28 style with an orange carbon fiber inlay on the Z. Overall I am very happy with them.

Thanks I appreciate it. It is a weird combination for sure. On another note I want to upgrade the brakes and think I have a combo put together but would like opinions. I was thinking brembo blanks, ebc pads, and stainless lines.

Does anyone have other suggestions?

No real updates other than a better pic of the 5th gen emblems and the ss spoiler. Also just picked up a 2015 SOM silverado to match.

Yea they didnt make many. There are a few for sale out there still as I believe it was a limited edition color run. It is a pretty close match to the cars though.
