Default 89' IROC-Z 6.0 L96 swap

Hello All

Ive got a built 89' IROC that ive been working on for a few years now, i completely tore the car appart and worked it all back together, its already been through one motor swap and now its time for another. If anyone here is apart of thirdgen.org you may have seen this build from the start but not too long ago i came across a good deal on a 6.0 L96 with 10,000 miles for 2k. I can get myself around any LT engine just as anyone else that grew up in the points distributor days, but as far as LS engines go im not as knowledgeable so if a point arises that anyone thinks they could throw in a few pointers ... by all means do so. On that note i can take constructive criticism but if you wanna bash and badger take it elsewhere please.

Let start with the car

Its a 1989 true IROC-Z , ive been asked before why cut and weld on a true Z car and the only answer i can give is when i got the car it needed it. It had been left for a while, the whole fuel system was gummed up, the harness had more splits than most wigs and if you drove it anywhere the VATS system would lock you out of the car. So... i was frustrated and just done with the stockness, it was time to rid it of the sad excuses GM gave us for wiring and horsepower back in the late 80s and early 90s. I pulled it into the garage one day and ripped it all the way down.

I built a mild 350 and then mounted a TCI superstreet fighter behind it. I took the torque arm off of the tailshaft housing and mounted a UMI tubular cross member and matching torque arm, i then bought a Moser 9" custom built for the third gen camaros, i threw in the extra cash for the aluminum third member and new trutrack posi. I took the time and milled my spindles to work with C6 corvette brakes front and rear, C6 wheels to break up the black, i also removed the fuel tank and replaced it with a RCI fuel cell mounted in the trunk, i used summits 1/2" alluminum line and a Holley Blue pump to fuel the SBC. I shaved the firewall and battery trays and made cold air ducts for the dual cold air set up that i built, a gilmer cog style belt system was added and custom built set of valve covers to add some shine. I like the look of an alluminum dash but also like how the stock dash complimented the inside of the car, so i hand built an alluminum dash that mimic'd the stock one, i plan to build a alluminum console to match the stock one and im also going to put power windows and remove the interior door handles and build alluminum door panels with billet armrests with the handle built in. I havnt finished the interior just yet, i plan to cage the car and add kirkey seats w/ harnesses.

Thats it for the car... lets get to some pictures.

Now here is the tag from the 6.0 i bought, i didnt take any pictures of the motor itself but we all know what one looks like, i figure the facts are more important anyway.

89' IROC-Z 6.0 L96 swap-20151027_151650.jpg

Heres what i know about it

The valley pan is flat and smooth so from what i gather it doesnt have DOD, however the timing cover has a buldge where the cam is and that from what ive read is VVT. This isnt bad news by any means because to delete the VVT is way cheaper than DOD so im happy with that. Code G - L96 is square port 832 heads and from what ive read these heads are pretty good for stock.

Now i know im going to have to change up all the accessories on the front, but im hoping the truck intake will fit because i hear they make good power. Now if i can... i believe this intake is set up for E85, it has square alluminum rails and a friend said that was an identifying option for E85, can i keep the rails and injectors if i plan to just run regular pump gas? We dont have alot of E85 stations here.

Ive thought of keeping the TH350 but from what i understand that if i do so and use a stand alone harness and tune the trans for a manual, that my idle in drive will dip and fall almost to dying. If thats true as ive heard then i plan on selling the TH350 with the motor and going to 4L60E.

I also understand i have to change the pan, but thats no biggie

I plan to do a VVT delete and cam swap to a
Trickflow - PN# 30602003

Comp Springs - PN# 924-16

TF Chromoly Pushrods - PN# 21407400

Any +s or -s with the engine? Feel free to lend a hand cause i need all the info i can get.

Today i snapped some pictures of the new motor.

89' IROC-Z 6.0 L96 swap-1446412400.jpg

It had a truck water pump attached, i removed it and tried bolting up to car water pump that they threw in for free but the VVT timing cover gets in the way and it wont bolt up. They also left the oil cooler lines and block, i may try and flange the lines they left or drill and tap the cooler block. I dono if this has been tried before but any input would be appreciated. They hack and slashed the harness and the only thing i could salvage besides all the plugs ( which im just using them as covers so the connections dont get dirty ) the only other thing they left was the coil harness's. I havnt looked too much into buying a harness yet but i figured if it came with them, having an extra set is just insurance.

Trying to identify this block.

I tried a VIN decode but as for the block it didnt help a whole lot, i know the L96 is a head package but i think from what i can find the block is a LY6? I know the LQ9 and LQ4 are also 6.0s but i dont think they came with the L96 heads from what ive seen around the forums.

I also saw this

This may be rhetorical but does this necissarily mean this is a Gen IV block? Or is it just an identifying stamp?

Here is what i was talking about as for the E85 rails in an earlier post.

Again is this a way to identify flex fuel? And if this is flex fuel can i keep the rails and injectors.

Another thing im curious about is i have a RCI 15 gal fuel cell in the luggage compartment, it has 1/2" alluminum lines running from the tank all the way to the motor in using now, for a pump i have a holley blue and for a filter im using a canton all 10AN fittings. Ive heard running alluminum line on fuelie engines is a no/no, and that the holley blue wont hold its weight against the LS demands. Any truth to this or is it just opinions.

To answer some of my own questions incase someone later on does a simular build...

Yes this is a Gen IV block, it does have flex fuel but at this point still dont know if i can use the rails or injectors and the 1/2 aluminum line from Summit is rated to 200psi. Unfortunately the holley blue pump wont meet the demands of a EFI and should be used for carb'd motors only.
