Default 1999 Camaro Z28 Project - Procharger Time!

Picked up a '99 Z28 m6 roller back in June. Drove over 14 hours round trip to pick it up. Has about 89000 miles on it and is extremely clean. It even came with a 5.3 truck motor (ended up having 3 spun bearings and received no kind of compensation from seller). Early July, I went and picked up an lq4 long block and a t56 transmission. Since then I've been building up a collection of other needed parts and upgrades that I figured I might as well do while it's all torn apart. Plans, as of right now, consist of:

Engine Performance:
317 heads (came with the lq4)
BTR Stage 3 NA LS1/LS2 cam with cam kit
Dorman intake
Ported stock throttle body
Longtubes

Other Drivetrain:
LS7 clutch
Tick adjustable master cylinder
MGW shifter

I'm sure I'm forgetting other stuff, but that's what I can remember right now. Still working on getting everything I need. Time for pics.

Been a while since I updated. Still gathering some parts and trying to take my time and do things how I want. I have added a few goodies to my collection since making this thread. I have a lot of things piled up in my room (cam kit, intake, clutch, billet mounts, coils, lifters, timing chain and gears, etc.) Found an ls6 intake for a good price, so I bailed on the ls6 dorman.

Couple pics of stuff. Custom Spec BTR cam by the way.

Ordered a bronze bushing trunnion kit today. Hopefully ordering an adjustable master, f body pan, bell housing, and a melling oil pump soon and that should pretty much end the list besides a few nickle and dime items that will inevitably add up.

Awesome progress seems like a pretty clean car. What's the goals for the car?

Well, for now, about 400whp for a decently fun street car. Trying to keep it mild as I'm in college and I'm stretching my budget pretty thin at the moment lol. Eventually I'd like to do a centrifugal setup, but that's a few years away. Especially if I stay at school for another year to do my masters. Next summer I'd like to just do some simple aesthetics and keep my costs pretty low.

Painted my ls6 intake over the past few days. Did a cast iron color. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

New pan from Dorman. Was a little unsure, but I heard a lot of good things from guys on facebook groups and after looking around online.

I was bored yesterday and decided to but the bronze bushings and trunnions in. Was repetitive, but easy. However, today, I pulled the valvetrain components off of my heads and found some not so good things. My first thought was blow by, but considering where a lot of the gunk is (between valve seats and guides), I figure it's probably guides/seals. Got me worried though, so I might tear down the bottom end and throw new rings on. It would also give me an opportunity to replace the hardware. Would be more money, but I would rather this build take longer if it meant doing it right.

Been a while since I posted. Here's an update. Should hopefully be going in soon.

She's been rebuilt since my last post.

Here's the mod list off the top of my head:
Stock bottom end rebuild (new pistons and arp rod bolts)
BTR custom cam (232/240 .600/.600 115+3)
Melling high pressure pump
Cloyes ls2 timing set
Ls7 lifters
Ls2 lifter trays
Alper motorsport headstuds
Ls3 head gaskets
Stock 317s with BTR .660 double platinum kit
Ls6 intake
Ls3 coils
Speed Engineering 1 7/8 long-tubes

Also planning on running a catch can.

Default 1999 Camaro Z28 Project

Been a long time since an update. Some key points to mention:
  • Motor and trans are in the car
  • It actually moves. Not well, but it moves.
  • Has some running issues, but hopefully they will be fixed shortly. Been fighting with some stalling, misfiring, and stubborn codes.
  • The front end has been lowered and the suspension has been updated, although I still need to do the rear.
  • Bought this car with a 9" rear end and didn't know it lol. The previous owner did not mention it, so I am assuming he didn't know either. I just kind of glanced over it since he said nothing about it. It's got 31 spline axles with 3.89 gears. It needs a little cleaning up, but that can wait.
  • The original break in tune from a local performance shop (a fairly big one too) did a poor job in my opinion. I think that may have been part of the problem with it running so poorly. I sent my pcm in to dynotune motorsports in Columbus and Brian took care of me. He said the old tune was full of issues, so we'll see if it helped. I have not had the chance to start it recently.
Plans for Winter:
  • Purchase and install new 1350 style pinion yoke and order a proper length driveshaft
  • Install new sway bars
  • Do the rear suspension (panhard, lcas, shocks, springs)
  • Purchase and install subframe connectors
  • Get the rest of the exhaust on (speed engineering ORY and Gibson exhaust)
  • Get the car street ready so I can get it on the road come Spring
  • Possibly remove the AC box so I can actually work in the rear of the bay. I will retain the heat system if so.

Good to see the update and pictures.

Your LS6 intake looks sweet so do the brakes and valve covers.

Looking forward to more updates.

The car is sitting outside for the winter on our farm, hence why it's so dirty. Anyway, here is a link for an open header exhaust clip. The new coil harnesses and new tune seem to have really made a difference.

Replaced most of the rear suspension last week and also added subframe connectors.

Just purchased a new slip and pinion yoke from moser as well. Hopefully I can get them on soon and measure for a new driveshaft. I just need to get the rear end and wheels properly centered first.

It's great to see the Z28 coming along so well!
Looks like you've taken you time and done quality upgrades.
Look forward to more pictures and details.

Thanks! It's been a long process. Currently have some issues with stalling when shifting/coasting. Basically, if I'm rolling and I engage the clutch the RPMs drop right past my idle speed and will typically stall. However, if I throw it in neutral and let off the clutch and then coast it will stop right at my idle speed. My tuner, Brian, has been trying to help me work through it. He thinks I may have to come back down to Columbus and have my tune adjusted. It would be unfortunate, as it's a decent drive just to have minor tune changes made. I have a couple things I need to look into first before we decide if that is the route we want to go. Fingers crossed. Perhaps I can even find someone locally with tuning software so that we could run it and send the info down to Brian and he could make his changes remotely. That would be preferred.
