Default 2000 z28 LS1 REAR MAIN SEAL

Hey I have a 2000 z28 this was my dream car I finally got one. Well it seems to have a oil leak took it to my mechanic he says it's my rear main seal. So I'm getting it replaced but my mechanic says the seal usually wears a ring into the crank and jf it did I will need to get my engine rebuilt ??? Is this normal ? Thanks for the help
