Default Is an 02 V6 Camaro a good first car?

Im 16 and im about to get a car. I found a 2002 Camaro V6 Camaro with 60,000 miles for $6,500. Its an auto, has t-top, cd player, and power everything. Now is this car going to give me any problems? Also is it going to waste a lot a gas?

Not many people on here own a V6 camaro or firebird. But I do and it was my first car got it when I was 17 and its a great car and gets good gas mileage. The car is quick sure its not a LS1 or LT1 but its still got some power in it and there plenty mods you can do.

not to mention, 1st car and 300+ hp usually means totalled car.

I think the V6 Camaro would be a great choice. They have as much power as the old 5.0 TPI camaros from the 80s.

Where is this car? I'll buy it if you don't! I've only seen a few 98-99 V6's going for $6500 around here. It should get about 30mpg or so. I want one for a daily driver since they get better mileage than my 4 banger Sonoma and are quicker too. 3800 V6's are pretty bullet proof and if well taken care of can last 200,000+ miles with minor maintenance.

It's a good first car, but you can't lose sight of the fact that it's rear wheel drive and has no posi-traction. That makes our '99 Firebird a real chore in rain or ice conditions--regardless of tires. It's very light in the back end and will wiggle in a heart beat.

But if you get good at mastering it in those conditions, you can then drive any high performance RWD car with confidence.

My first car was a 71 Pontiac Safari Station wagon with a 400 2bbl V8 and auto trans with bias ply tires! I made it through winter in Michigan with that! I actually hate FWD cars in snow/ice/rain. I've gotten into more trouble with the couple I have drove than ANY RWD vehicle I have ever driven. Just get used to how it handles and you'll be fine.

my first car was a dodge avenger 4 cyl. drove it for a couple monthes saved up money, and bought a 99 chamelion, ( w/e you wanna call it the color changed blue / green ) camaro wrecked, fixed it up and drove it for a year, it was a great car, not to mention i turned around and sold it and made some extra $$ to buy the SS stick to the v6 at first, as said earlier 300+ HP first cars usually means they are gonna be totalled. and by the way even though the car was wrecked previously i never had a single thing go wrong with that car.

Yes V6 camaros are a great first car. Not enough power to get you in trouble, but at the same time you're learning how to drive the chassis. Later you can graduate to a V8 model once you get more experienced.

Or you could just do a V8 swap if you liked the car that much....

Please just save up and get a V8, even if you get an LT1. I see too many v6 Camaros around here.

Yea, if you are a responsible kid and are not out there to "race" and will not see winters, jsut go for the V8. I am 16 and have an LS1 for my first car. I am a very responsible kid however. Understand the law and obey it. Trust me, i have been egged on thousands of times to do stupid **** that i know i would get into trouble doing sometime or another so i jsut dont do it. I mean sure enough i always get that urge to "feel the ls1 power" and do a 30 roll to about 70 on a country road back to my house every once n a while. Just make sure dont speed all the time cuz ticket will kill your insurance or street race doing stupid **** to total it or anything dumb. The f-body is a very easy car to drive and ls1 is there to make it fun. You will regret going V6 unless you cant afford insurance or whatever. I believe a responsible 16 year old can handle the ls1 but there are some 16 year old.... msot i should say, that Should NOT have 300+ hp. Most 16 year olds drive like idiots... if your a responsible kid, you can do it! Go for the LS1~

The 3800 Series II (96+) was voted by Wards as one of the ten best engines ever made.

Good power, with good fuel economy, and rock solid reliability.

And, it's by no means slow (among stock cars).

And if you need a bit more power, they have turbo kits... and with the cost of those, you'd still be under what it would cost to get a 2002 V8.

All in all, I'd say it would make a pretty good first car. Decent power without being too much for the inexperienced, and very reliable.

I would start out in a V6 because im about to get an LS1 an insurance isnt looking to good since im 18. I wouldnt spend any money modding the V6 though. And insurance may still be high because youll be driving a "Camaro". Good luck, safe driving, and watch out for motorcycles PLEASE god damn it! Ive almost been killed multiple times and almost squashed a couple myself. Of course, i live in Florida so its ok.

6500?! that's well less than HALF of the retail value of that car.

i'd assume something is wrong with her.

Being 16 , the insurance would be a lot more affordable than a V8 car as someone said above. Gas mileage wouldn't that big of a difference as the LS1 is very good on gas . It would still be cheaper ,though because you don't have to run premium in a V6 car. You might want to have it professionally inspected before you purchase it because it is a low price for that model. Definitely talk to your insurance agent too before you buy it.

I've actually been told that there's only about a $20/m difference between V6 and V8 Camaros on insurance. That's the quote I was given because it still has 2 doors, and.. well it's a Camaro So I got my LT1 Z28 as a first car. Just drive responsible, keep it at the track, and if you must do something stupid, make sure you are positive you can outrun the police
