Default Ls1 ae86????

hey guys! spring is almost here it was only -15 here today that means its almost cruisin time!

any who i was just wondering if any one here has seen a ls powered ae86? i picked mine up a bit ago for cheap and thought it might be a good idea. do you guys think its possible? like within reason? the only thing that i think would be an issue is hood clearance.. aside from all the custom fab work.

here's the car:

hell yeah it's do-able!!!

if people can stuff 2J's/KA's/SR20's/etc.. in there all the time an LS1 would be cake.

i've got an 85 corolla shell for future projects, and looking at it i would think with the right tranny tunnel any hood fitment issues wouldn't even show up...

do it!!!

I think it could be done. That would make for an awesome car. I have thought of this idea a lot but just don't have the funds to fix up my SR5.

It should fit. I had a 4.3/t5 sitting in mine for a test fit!

I decided to go to a 20v 4age instead. A month later, the car mysteriously caught fire...

Still have the JDM engine at least!!

I thought of doing that before and found that a narrowed 8.8 will fit. Just an idea.

DO IT i have brought this up and been told it would be stupid but i think it has potential to be one of the best sleepers on the road. they weigh in at wut?, just over 1k lbs? ls swapped rx-7's are ealsisy in the 11's think of the times you could lay down with just a decent set of tires

the coupes weigh around 2100 stock, hatches weigh a bit more. i'm in the midst of doing a 1uz into a coupe race car for a friend right now. you will HAVE to put in a beefier rear end, a mk1 supra live rear end would work and is a pretty simple swap but an 8.8 would be better if you are planning to build up the engine and abuse it.

I asked this same question a couple of years ago after watching an ae86 in a D1 contest. It was the crowed fav for being so small and cute yet keeping up with the bad *** skylines and ls powered rx-7s. I asked the owner what he thought of the idea and he said, it might be to much power! HA, never to much right. He also wondered how much weight it would but over the front tires (good point)
Anyone know how much a dressed 20v engine and transmission weight?

All that i know is that i can bear hug it and put it in the engine bay. No crane needed!!

Looked it up...engine only weighs 126kgs (278lbs) dry and fully dressed...wow! Add another 125lbs by the time you add tranny clutch fluids etc etc etc.

Thanks TTls1GP
So a dressed ls1 w/ clutch & flywheels about 497.2 and the t56 weights about 125. So total weight about 622 pounds. Or about 219.2 pounds more the the front of the car. Might want to think about that.
If someone has more accurate weights please post them up!

the same as someone putting in an LS1 into an Rx7. The engine's gotta add close to 200lbs more.

Whatever you add up front, take it to the rear. put the battery in the trunk, add a roll cage (your gonna need it anyway)...etc etc etc.

Setup your suspension accordingly and it should be ok.

a guy i know put in a 1uz (lexus V8 4.0L) into his ae86 and its an aluminum block like the ls1,
also the guys on the miata forums who do this swap say weight only goes up 200 pounds over the original IRON block 4cyl.
turns out the transmission is the heavy part in this.
