Default Looking into doin 5.3 or 4.8 s10, need answers

So i've been tossing around the idea of doing a BUDGET 4.8 or 5.3 swap into an s10. I just want something i can beat the crap out of, cut up, run nitrious and not really care.

Like mentioned this would have to be budget, i know with budget comes cheaper parts and not as much reliability but i just want to build something i can take to that track and run decent numbers, low 12's high 11's or so? faster would be cooler but i understand its rough on a budget.

I can get a roller s10 for around 400 bucks so that is covered...

5.3 for $400 or 4.8 for $250ish (from local guy) is the 5.3 worth the extra $$? It will be a cam only motor and i would like to do a small shot (100 or 150) Will these motors be able to handle that?

Planning on doing a victor jr with a carb and keeping the coils and using the MSD box to control those...

so looking at...
truck-400
motor-250-400 depending on 4.8 or 5.3
cam and springs-400-600
intake- 270
carb- 350
MSD box- 320
tranny-300ish (th400)

thats $3000ish total...

i would still need a fuel cell (used) fuel pump, fuel lines, headers, and motor mounts...

are hedmen the only people who make long tube ls headers for s10s? those things are very expensive... Only thing that is really killing my budget here...

i know i could cut some more corners here if i can find some used parts but that is all luck if i can find used parts at the time...

Anything else i'm missing or leaving out? any suggestions to make this cheaper? I really dunno if i can swing the 3 g's and really want to do this...

Thanks!

Since there is a good chance the S-10 you start with (87 and up) will have been fuel injected from the factory, you may as well keep it injected to save money. If the engine comes complete with injection on it, you just need a harness and then just stick an EP-381 fuel pump or a Walbro 255 in the tank and you are done. This will save you the cost of the MSD box (300) carb intake (250) and carb (100 used to 350 new)

Also check my sticky at the top of this section for more budget ideas....I just finished another 5.3 swap in less than two weeks and I haven't figured the exact dollars yet, but Im thinking Im going to come in around 1200 total for this one.

Besides, you have the cheap EFI swap guru in town, Joe

Oh i was planning on having a little chat with the local LS swap guru haha

So i'd be looking at 1200 with the LS1 intake, fuel rails and all that? or is that with the truck intake still? i could deal with either.

Then i would need a th400 correct?

What are we looking at for motor mounts and that fun stuff?

I might make a stop over today to ask some questions.

Budget and s10 do not go in the same sentence for LS swaps. I was very frugal only buying what I had to to make mine work and work well and it turned out to be quite expensive. It's done now and runs great knocks down 25-27 wa 6.0 without fail. Took quite a while to do it will not be a quick swap either

well i plan on getting the car shop inc motor mounts and their headers. Truck wont have PS or anything, just crank pulley, WP, and alt so that will all be simplified.

here is the price break down i have taken from Meanyellowz (LS swap genious, and is local so he is close for advice)

5.3 motor- 450 used
Th350 or 400- 200 used
Harness & fuse box- 150
Headers and motor mounts- 340 new
Russell fuel rail fittings, 5/16 & 3/8 - 6AN $28 new
255lph pump- 120 new
GM flexplate spacer and bolts $60 new
S&P coolant temp adapter 3/8NPT-12mm $24 new
o2 sensor bungs (2) $8 new
junkyard ECM $40 used
o2 sensors # 13193 Bosch (2) $100 new
Delphi MAF $94 new
PCV valve $5 new
Spectre air filter $25 new
Upper radiator hose $22 new
Used Camaro radiator $40
Used Camaro e-fans $60
Fuel filter (factory) $7
Fuel line & -6AN hose ends (4) $80 new
adapter from metric o-rings to 6 AN (2) $22 new

Total- 1875

so that is around 1900 for a complete ready to run 5.3 th400 with car shop inc shorty headers.... I will have around 400 in a rolling chassis s10.... so $2500ish for running truck...

as you can see most of those parts are new on there and maybe could save a bit here and there if i can find some deals on used stuff....

You are heading in the right direction for sure. Cool thing about these trucks is that they lend themselves really well for being purpose built. I built mine for long term reliability, fast little sleeper, looks like you are heading towards a driveable racer. So yep somewhere in the sub 4K range by the time everything is done and you'll have a fast fun little ride.

Well for right now its going to be a stock motor. If i have money later i'll yank it out and throw a cam and springs in it. and as far as a stall i should be able to pick up a th400 stall dirt cheap around here locally.
