Default How hard is it to get a 76 camaro to pass smog w/ ls1?

I found a super cheap 76 camaro in really good condition. I plan on doing an LQ4 swap to it with a FAST intake, N2O direct port, Trex cam, and L92 heads... would i be able to get this to pass smog? I know that this is the first year of having to pass smog, just wondering what the regulations were for swapping a newer engine (LS1, LQ9, LQ4, etc) into something so old. Could i get away with this? What about Longtubes and an X pipe? Or should i just say F**K that and get a 75 or 74? ...it has to be a 75 or 74, not 73 for what i have planned. Thanks

It would be the same for any other 76 and newer car in calif... you would need to use all of the donner car/truck Smog equipement, make a appointment with a Calif official referee station for CARB inspection shop and if you pass your 76 would be certified as a newer car/truck.

I posted this before.. for California Swaps..
http://www.retrolsx.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34

Go to the Calif DMV site for completed guide lines.
http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...uidelines.html

And your last post question, LT would be illegal and Yes to the Cat's.

You could weld in 2 way universal cats... I think they just do a visual under the car ... then the check the tail pipe...

YOU will sail through with a 1976 model year car with a LSx modded or not.

If you get the 76 (or 74) keep in touch with me, I have a 76 Camaro that I'm doing a 5.3 swap on right now.

Be cool to share ideas, the only difference I don't have to do emissions in my state

oh yes... just that minor difference. hahaha... i actually want to do a bumblebee clone project is why im doing it. except with an ls1 style motor, since i love them so much. ive been looking and there really isnt any 74s or 75s for sale anywhere i looked. well, theres one, but it has that damn soft vinyl top, which is just out of the question. how much would a semi-decent 74 or 75 go for do you guys think? and by semi-decent, i mean purely running condition. it can be scratched to hell with paint peeling off, mismatched wheels, and a suuuuper crappy interior, which i actually would prefer since its all getting redone anyway. plus, i havent yet seen anyone do a bumblebee clone of the second gen... also, if a 75 came with cats, but is still smog exempt (75 and older are smog exempt) do i still need them?

Good guy to know. I like Washington my 83 is exempt from testing since its older than 25 years. My 01 passes with ease with long tubes. California must suck for that crap if they actually still test a 76. Damn.

On a 76, you would have to install all of the smog equipment from the donor vehicle including the MIL light, both cats and all four O2 sensors Basically, it would be a later model vehicle with an older body. Then you would have to get it inspected by the smog check referee. Any aftermarket parts would need to be certified by CARB (California Air Resources Board). The so called "universal" cats have been illegal since January.

As far as finding a shady smog shop, I'd be real careful with that one. There is now much more enforcement being directed towards shops and/or smog technicians who illegally certify vehicles. Also be aware, many police departments are being trained to inspect vehicles for missing or modified smog equipment.
