I had no idea the pressures used were that high.

Good stuff.

Take a look at the pump, sometimes they'll interchange. I've got a lq4 with a dodge Dakota pump in the gm res, same casting...

I'm thinking about trimming this spring to relieve the pressure.
the solution to the rack problem..A kit for $17.00.
I got involved in this same problem w/ a 500 box on my 55 Chevy. I have the 05 Hummer ,[6.0] pump feeding it. Waaaay too touchy.
A call to Borgeson and a kit from Summit has been installed. [I used 3 shims to drop the psi to approx 1000psi.
The kit has 5 shims, a tool to hold the cartridge, o'ring, and instructions.
http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/catalo...p-1-c-133.html

He also said they use LUCAS p/s leak stop oil in the pumps. Makes them much smoother and alot less noisy.

Haven't driven it yet..Waiting on inj plugs.
Nice thing about the shims, it doesn't ruin the spring if you cut it too short!

The Lincoln LS I'm swaping into has rather high PSI for its relief valve:
Flow 9.00 ± 0.75 liter/min (2.4 ± 0.2 gpm) @ 1,000 kPa (145 psi) @ 1,500 rpm
Minimum capacity 4.0 liter/min (1.0 gpm) @ 4,999 kPa (725 psi) @ 500 rpm
Relief pressure 11,197-11,997 kPa (1,624-1,740 psi)

Either of the CTS-V pumps seem to be ideal to match it (the later model with a control valve), but I was wondering what happens if I just go with the Fbody pump with a control valve (my LS1 is out of an fbody)? That will mean the pressure relief will be much lower than the factory specs.

One big key is the depth of the mount for the PS pulley - i.e. is it the CTS-V/G8/Corvette depth, the F-body/GTO depth or the Truck depth?
You have the F-Body accessories, so the F-body pump would likely be your best match. The CTS-V won't mount up and work w/o some significant fabrication or a bracket I don't know about.

Thanks Bob, I assumed there there were brackets available for it -- maybe not. So the lower pressure relief won't affect steering too much? The CTS and Lincoln LS both have high pressure and both are "luxury" cars, so if it just makes it require a little more force to turn, I have no problem with that.

This is an excellent thread. Question now is what source do you use to determine the requirements of one's rack or steering box? In my case I have an LS1 pump and a 86 T-Bird rack. I put a flow restrictor on it but I'm starting to think I need to determine pressure requirements. Thanks. -Bob

Alldata probably should have it (I don't have access to it, I found my specs googling around).

Here's a pump for an 86 thunderbird:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AAZ-20-6248F/

From there, you might be able to call the manufacturer and ask what the specific specifications are. You might be able to just call Summit and see if they know.

Also, it looks like this is same product, so that means most likely the racks are the same (I know the mustang and thunderbird share the same platform):
http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...A1206248F.html

So you might have better luck finding the specs for a mustang pump.

Good luck.

Does anyone know where the pressure relief spring on the CTS-V pumps are? Mines off an 04-05 and in a little 90 Miata. Needless to say, the steering is VERY light. Needs firmed up a hair.

Up inside the pump, under the HP fitting...

So the pump needs split? How much of the spring should I cut off? Sorry, I feel very naive and don't want to waste a good pump on a science experiment.

No, I believe the pressure line fitting unscrews out of the body and the the relief valve is under it.

Default 5.3 with T-Bird Rack

Will the Power Steering Pump from my '05 5.3 be in the range of the correct pressure and flow for the Thunderbird rack n pinion on my TCI Pro Touring front clip?

Unlikely, Glenn. I found out real quick it didn't work on my setup when I tried bleeding the system, a slight nudge of the steering wheel ended up with violent lock to lock jerking. I'd stick the DSE fitting in the pump before putting it in the car if possible, it's a bit harder doing it after final assembly.

A LS2 power steering pump from a 2004-06 GTO matches the T-Bird rack almost perfectly 2 GPM flow and 1100 PSI..........I had a Mustang II rack and the car was way Twitchy........swaped a Stock T-Bird rack and everything is now "Happy"......

Great info! Going to try and match a lsx power steering pump to an original 1955 chevy power assist unit. Said to require 750 to 850 psi max.
