Possibly leak from bad gaskets. Same thing on my 2001 Camaro I replaced new gasket to stop leaks bec. of aged.
Look like more than +80K miles on that motor..
I am searching for 700r4 would fit on 5.3l if my sig. (if Camaro not luck to sold in next 3 weeks), I would put the 5.3l/700r4 into that Camaro.

Hey guys sorry I was away for a few days.
When I first got the motor I did do a compression test and everything was great in that respect. All of the spark plugs look brand new except for one which had a little bit of oil build up on it, but nothing significant. Of course I turned the motor over by hand and everything moved smoothly, like it should. I have not had it running or heard it run before. I may try to get it running for a little bit before I toss it in the vette just to make sure everything is indeed running how it should. I hope this thing isn't a basket case!

It's going very well! Unfortunately my computer crashed a few weeks ago so I haven't been able to upload progress pic, I should have some up by the end of this week though once my computer gets fixed.
So far, I have:
- Installed the valve covers and freshened them up a bit.
- New spark plugs and wires installed.
- I acquired a 2002 LS1 harness with PCM.
- New C4 LSX conversion coated headers arrived
- I got new LS1 accessories powder coated and installed along with the water pump, power steering pump and harmonic balancer.
- The LS1 intake manifold has been prepped with LS6 injectors and the billet fuel rails.
- A new low profile firebird oil pan, pickup tube, and windage tray has replaced the HUGE truck oil pan as well.
All that's left to do on the engine is to remove the header bolt that snapped off in the head. Maybe if everything goes according to plan this week, I will be able to finally start ripping out the crossfire engine this Sunday!
Pics to follow shortly...

UPDATE:
Here's what I've been up to lately. This past Sunday I succesfully removed the engine with help from a few friends and a few pizzas
Installing the new 2002 LS1 Firebird oil pan, windage tray and pickup tube. Check out the height difference between the two oil pans a few pics down...
I freshened up the coil packs and valve cover. Now they aren't so rusty!
Powder coated brackets, pulleys, and timing cover from mike the powder coater
