Default Melling

Melling MPL-101 - Melling Pre-Lube Engine Oiler

Melling #MPL-101
Pre-Lube Engine Oiler

There is a port right below the coolant temperature sensor where you feed the pressurized oil in.

You can use a yard sprayer, there cheap... you will just need to adapt the hose which isnt too hard. I use my pressure brake bleeder, just clean it out really well first.

You can make your own pre-luber. Buy a cheap fluid pump, in my case an old fuel pump. Find the plug you'd normally hood your pre-oiler to (driver-side block below spark #1). I screwed in a fitting, hooked the hose to it, then pump, then the other end into a new qt of oil. Then give it power until you get pressure....Done!

Or you can do what GM says to do when starting their new crate motors. Pull the plugs, disable the fuel and crank the motor over for 10 seconds at a time until you register oil pressure.

EDIT: orignally said 30 sec, but the instruction says 10 seconds.

I use a $55 moroso accumulator

put a 1.5 qt in it and hit it with a little air to push it thru the motor.

quick and easy

Nope it was Ford in a presidential address Aug 12 1974 but is often misattributed to Mr. Jefferson and Barry Goldwater.

But yes still a favorite and true none the less.

Gm does not have this instruction on any LS engine.

LS engines the pump is located in timing cover. So it is dry, it is not submerged in the oil pan.
They need to be primed.
And when dealing with a dry/wet sump IE: LS7 it is most important.

No where does GM have this instruction.

Look at page 5, items 2 & 3 of this GM installation guide. this one is for an LS9 but they have similar guides for all their other LS crate motors.

I zung? zang? (past tense?) mine a day or two ago. Took a while but eventually I got some to the mech oil press gauge and under the valve covers. Still think I'll pop them both off and pour some oil in there before my first real start.

Doesn't it already come prelubed with engine assembly lube?! I thought that stuff would keep the bearings safe for the 2 seconds it takes the oil pump to get pressure up to the top of the engine. Make sure your oil filter is filled with oil. That will make a significant difference.

When you're ready to run the engine for the first time, fill the oil filter with oil and start the engine.

some video about this?

I am really confused about this. Any video how to prime NEW crate LS3 engine installed in the car? I dont want crank engine without priming with oil. But how to force oil circulation without rotating crank??? Sorry I am not mechanic but know that bearings can be destroyed in miliseconds without oil pressure.

Nahh. Obviously not true.

Here are the directions that GM publishes for their NEW LS3 crate motors. It includes detailed instructions on how to prelube NEW motors.
