i hope to have the engine bolted in within a month! and driving in 2 just have to find a tranny for it now, any suggestions for that?

when you guys say the ls2 timing chain... the single roller? or double roller?

Single Roller stock Factory Chain for a LS2 Engine, Chromeoly Steel.

GM Part 12586482.

It's better than the previous stamped-steel one.

No need for double IMO..I have the single LS2 Chain in my 408, no issues.

ok thanks again merv. i got that engine opened up yesterday and it looks very good inside so far. i still plan on pulling it apart new rings and bearings though... can the stock lq4 pistons handle spray?

150 shot would be safe. Are you changing rod bolts? Yes, just the single chain works fine.

i cant get the lower timing gear off the crank. i tried a 2 jaw puller and it just jumps off the teeth everytime. i am going to try a harmonic balancer puller and a bearing splitter if i can get it on there

Let the Machine Shop do that..if you are using that Crank then leave it on there so they can balance it, there is no difference in them Gears with the LS Engines, I beleive the LS7 is the one that's different.

i was just going to hone it and put new rings and bearings in myself with a new timing set. lots of slack in the one i took off. and figure i might as well put the new gears on too... machine shop charges too damn much to do anything. does it really need balanced running the same stock internals?

spoke to the machine shop today $85 to hone it with a 4 stage torque plate hone job or $45 for a 2 stage hone. rods he cant rebuild since they are split caps and not machined, and $50 to vat block

me either...around here we get a standard hone or a hone with torque plates...

As for the rods they make .002 bearings so he can check the big end and if they are out he can hone .002 and you can run the oversized bearings....

is the torque plate hone any better? the for the basic he uses 2 different grits for the hone, for the torque plate hone he uses 4... the bearing surfaces in this engine are virtually unwore. i do have plastigage, any idea on what the specs are?

You're supposed to use torque plates when working on the bores.

A torque plate simulates the cylinder head being bolted on the motor, so that the bore is true under load. Honestly, if the bores are good and don't need to be punched out, it should just need a glaze break. I honed mine myself.

are the lq4 rods any stronger or different than the ls2? im considering the swap to raise my compression, how will this affect me using the ls3 heads?

Car Rods are different..Compression depends on what Pistons you have, the Head Gasket you are using, and the Chambers on the Heads.

The better question is what Compression do you want and we can help from there..you got the LQ4 right?
