Default Chevelle/GTO/Cutlass with B-body EFI tank questions in progress

Guys who did the B-body EFI tank conversion on their GM classic A-body cars,
I need suggestions because I'm kinda stuck mid progress in this install.

I'm not sure what to do about the mounting strap situation.
The tank can't go anymore closer to the rear end or it's too close to my exhaust.
So I have to figure out how I'm going to make my new straps to mount it.

The rear hanger holes , the tank is damn near hovering over them.
I know Stealth71 welded in new brackets. Just looking to see what others did.
If you have pics , please post them up how you strapped it in.

Thanks.

Tank view from the rear bumper, you can see it's almost over the tank strap mounting points.

I weld two U-straps out of !/4" round to the rear of my trunk Pan, I think my tank is further rearward than you have yours though. I used 2" black nylon webbing to fit it up but I think I will bend-up 1 1/2" ss strap to finish up.

Holy mother of the good lord......
I don't wish this upon anyone.

Took about 15 tank installs with a jack, and removals to get this custom strap 98% perfect.
Now I have to try and duplicate it. ....and its dark.....this blows!!!! lol

Default My tank install

I did the swap... I used the tank and made some straps with some 1/8"x1" (from ACE). just bend the end to match up how the factory A-Body straps were, then for the front end of the strap. I doubled it up and welded it together for make sure I had a strong 90 bend for the bolts to be able to tighten and secure the tank.

I also had to cut a access how and build a cover, which came in handle about 2 years after the build. I had some grounding problem in the sender bulkhead. I was able to take the cover off, pull the sender, repair the grounding and button it up in an hour of work without dropping the tank.

I had to trim the frame rail about 3/16" for about 9" on each side to make sure I have enough clearance. Glued some rubber on the frame rail in case the tank did start banging side to side. Yeah.. the exhuast is close, but it has not caused any problem, don't worry about it. You can always put some heat shields on the pipes or tank if your that worried.

BCZEE,

Your pics were extremely helpful. Thanks,
Quick question guys, did you cut off the filler tube of the A-body tank to
put on the B-body tank ?? If not, what did you use ??

That little tube, where is it going to up by the filler tube ???
What is that for anyways ??

I used the B-Body filler tube, I cut the upper part shorter and then reconnected it (cut a little at a time until you find the right length). The smaller tube was also used. it is a vent tube that connects from the tank to the filler neck (see last picture).

Ahhh.......Okay, thanks.

Do you by chance have the part #'s for those 2 necks or where you ordered em from??

I didn't get it with my '95 Impala tank, and I doubt any yard is going to
separate it from one of theirs. Trying to look it up right now.

Here's another dumb question.....I found your car domain page.

My tank came without the fuel pump and sender.
It came just like this......

Where do I get the cover piece with the tubes that the pump and sender attach to ??

Rock Auto has the whole assembly for about $120, but you'll still need an aftermarket high pressure pump.
Call the yard and see if they still have the pump/sender. I found the tank/pump/sender for under $100 locally.

I also picked up the tank locally ($10) but needed the fuel pump sending unit. Went on the Impala site and kept posting; got one shipped to me for ~$50. If you're not in a hurry you may want to try that. Problem here in Ohio is all the ones in the pick a pull have rusty tubes which I didn't want.

BTW, and sort of on topic, what fuel pump should we use in these tanks? Looking for one that will support about 400rwhp but otherwise don't need a cadillac version...

Ahh....okay so it is part of the sending unit.
I wasn't sure.

Thanks Gary, I was going to order it from Rock Auto for the $116 iirc.
I'm also getting the Racetronix pump, not sure if I can use my A-body
tank bulkhead connector yet or not.

You know where I can knab some of those filler tubes for the tank??
Wasn't sure if they were sold new or not.
Google isn't helping much.

Filler Necks can be found on ebay. But cost with shipping, was going to be over $50. So i Cut off the filler neck from my old tank and bought about 8" 1 1/2" fuel fill hose.

Seen those pics already. I was looking for a pic of it on the ground, with the bumper on, from behind. Wanted to see how far down the tank hangs.
