finally got my engine in tonight(pics) - have a slip yoke question.
i finally got my engine and transmission in today. LQ4/4L80E into a 4 Door 1965 Chevelle. the car is my daily driver/my first car, i got it when i was 19 (im 20 now) and have had it for less than a year.
i was wondering what slip yoke will i need? the new transmission is a 4L80e(the old one was a 700R4). i can take any measurements you guys need - im new to this stuff, honestly i didnt even know what a slip yoke was 3 months ago(glad im learning/getting hands-on solo experience)
here are some of the pics(sorry the engines filthy, its been sitting out under a tree from a couple days now)
i still need to reposition my crossmember, tighten it down to the transmission, and get some holes in the frame to get everything secure.

Did your trans come with a yoke? Most of the 80e`s are designed for a bolt on yoke which means you need a conversion slip yoke (your car must have a slip yoke but a standard one may hang too far out of the transmission and not have adequate spline engagement) heres a link to what I`m talking about http://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p69_...pline_wth.html I`m not sure if your running a 1310 u joit or not, just let the driveshaft shop know what style output shaft your running. If you don`t have a threaded output shaft, you got one of the rare 80e`s that was made for a slip yoke and any th400 yoke will work

im almost sure that it has a rod with splines on it (like the 700r4 i took out), but ill have to double check tomorrow. so if it does have splines i could use any th400/4l80e yoke? sound good so far
how about the length of the yoke i purchase, i know if they are too long they can be cut down - but roughly how long should the yoke be(im guessing the slip yoke should cover all of rod/spline coming out of the trans - should there be "extra yoke"(hollow/not touching the transmission output shaft) sticking out from the transmission also)
and in regards to the U joint side of the slip yoke, are the sizes fairly universal?
thanks!!

The yoke will be furthest into the trans. with the rear susp. in full droop. So you want the yoke nearly (but not) bottoming the output into the yoke at that point. With a stock to lowered ride height car, the typical 5ish inches long TH400 yoke should be enough length.
Look up some charts of yoke part numbers; you'll see the range of lengths and common u-joint usages. I don't know what trucks typically received, but many of the TH400 yokes use 1350 u-joints. That size has been used by the big 3, yes.

You need a 32 spline TH400 yoke. There are many versions of this yoke available, all the way from stock to billet. If you plan to keep the driveshaft then try to get a yoke that uses the same u-joints as the weld yoke on your driveshaft. That way you can avoid using the adapter style u-joint. If, as mentioned above, your current u-joint in the front is the 3RL, then you should be able to find a 3RL slip yoke. Like this:

the driveshaft you are holding is a 1310 series u-joint. i can see the outside snap rings. the inside snap is a n3r series, that is not what you are holding. the 4l80 is the same as a th400 spline a ground hub diameter. pretty much a 4l80 and np241 transfercases are the same all full spline. dont get confused with the threads on the tailshaft. that is old stuff, and is fixed by counterboring. just order a 1310 th400 full spline like 6.125 center line to end i believe. spicer or neapco are great companies. push the slip yoke in the tranny til it bottoms out, pull out one inch (for slip) put both pinion yoke and slip yoke level with the world. with the rear tires thinking they are on the ground (jacks under rearend, not frame) and measure center to center of u-joints. take measurement to shop a have cut to fit.

turns out the output shaft on my 4l80E looks like a slip yoke design but it has a threaded hole in the middle(ill try to upload a picture)
could i just use a "slip on" 32 spline yoke (with a r3 end) and just ignore the threaded home in the middle?
thankks !!
