Default ok thinking of using a 8.1 here

Me and a friend were talking about the LS engines the other day and the 8.1 came up and how we never heard of noone building them. So now I have decided to play some with one plans are as follows:

Switching to carb (not sure on size of carb yet)
2 inch carb spacer
custom cut cam over 600 lift
headers

I however have a old 79 malibu that this thing would be perfect for.

The specs on this motor is 550hp/690tq Im not sure if these are true numbers, but if they are thats nice to start with.

Have any of yall played with these before?

Does anyone make a carb intake or ignition controller for the 8.1?
You can probably fine more hi performance upgrade parts in the marine industry.

You can use the LS1 carb ignition kit on the 8.1

They are 24x engines and use essentially the same harness as a LS1, just a different firing order

496 cid but with a 4.375 stroke. Great motor for torque.
Check out Raylar Marine for 496 performance parts.

The GM version is not even close to those numbers.
Mercs marine versions put out 385 or 425 hp. They dont publish torque numbers.
Raylar is pretty impressive:

I'm pretty sure the GM 8.1s were only around 340hp and 460ft/lbs
