Is the speedo a electronic or manual cable driven?

What wiring changes did you make?

Did the 5 speed have a pickup w/ no moving parts (kind of like the 4L60e) or did it have a gear driven elec. VSS?

its just like the one in the 4l60e, no mechanical to it at all. i left the vss output of the pcm out, and the input of the the speedo out in engine bay

I havent had much luck getting speedo's to work off the VSS out from any PCM but it works great if you splice into the VSS feed directly from the trans. Cant say ive tried that speedo though but its an easy thing to try

That truck may be new enough that it had the DRAC Module under the dash. If so, it will cause you problems trying to get everything to work. I'm not sure what year GM started using the DRAC module, but I think they stopped it completly by 95. Here is a site with more info on it.

I have a 1990 454SS as well. The DRAC is located in the guage cluster. In 1992 the DRAC was moved to be seperate from the gauges. My truck also has the VSS output from the 400/375 trans. It feeds into the computer first as far as I know. I don't know if the Dakota box will fix the issue for you but I agree with cam, splice and feed it directly. If that didn't do it then I might try the box. Better to try the free solution first. I hope that will fix it for you. Good luck.

According to alldata does your speedometer signal go directly from the trans to the speedo? or does it go through the original PCM first? All of the 80`s GM electronic speedo`s I have worked with so far used a 4000 pulse per mile square wave signal which is what the LS PCM puts out. But I have not worked with the speedo`s with a DRAC attached to the back yet.

this is what i did
There are two wires coming the original VSS on trans. One is Yellow (400 High) and the other one is Purple (401 Low). I spliced them to the LS1 pcm Purple/White (821 High) and Light Green/Black (822 Low).

its off a few mph, im gonna play with the tire od and see if i can get a little closer, thanks guys for all the input

My cousin is looking to do a similar swap in his 88 Chevy Pick up. Is there any detailed swaps that you read or followed that I could link him?

Wish I could be of help for your problem, sorry.
