Default 5.3 swap question

I have a friend who just bought a few used 100k mile 5.3's. we have one with the alternator starter and harness already on that we want to throw into his car. A few people keep telling us that we need to send the harness off for modifications. He is unsure why, and I have no clue. The only thing I can come up with is to change the connectors on the end to be able to fit the areas they need to read from, or too. Is it just so you can get the blinkers and things like that to work? Also, I keep hearing something about standalone harness. He is considering just putting on a carb and saying **** it. Any insight is greatly greatly appreciated. thank you.

The carb takes about 5 minutes to wire up. Its about four plugs and a hot wire. There is def more to the EFI. The wiring harness needs to be re-pined for the EFI.

When they say stand alone all that means is they have taken out everything not needed. Emissions and dash related items, and add a fuse panel and some relays fo give power and grounds to things to make the PCM work. It's not hard if you fallow a schematic. I did mine for about $40 and tool about 8hrs total. It works perfect. Look on youtube, there is some verygood tutorials.

Somewhere on the engine will be the VIN, If you put even the cheapest scanner on it the PCM will have the vin in it. Also you can search the VIN from the engine on internet or your local Chevy dealer and see if the PCM part number matches the vehicle the engine and harness came out of. I have an 003 engine and it uses a green/blue connector PCM.

Do you know where I can find vin? I looked on block can't find any vin.. On PCM it has serv. no. 09356249... I was told this isn't to a 5.3 if I get it flashed can I make it work... I don't have gas pedal or tax module yet so should I just go out and by matching parts?? Thanks for your reply
