If you're running a manual and set the ecu for that, it will be looking for a clutch pedal position switch. On DBW it looks for a 12 V NC signal, on cable it looks for ground, pins are different too.
I just wired my ecu for switched 12 V all the time. You jusat have to remember to hit the brake or off cruise contro, before you hit the clutch. Otherwise things spin very fast.

I found what my cruise switch looks like from Rosta. http://www.rostra.com/images/2503002/2503002-large.jpg They say theirs is a closed circuit. I found a write up about adding relays to the switch so I'll look into that when I install it.

If you don't want to mess with the relays, and only hook uo a few wires, I have a few GM cruise stalks that I have re-finished and converted to a 4 wire switch, that I will sell. They look just like this pic. Comes with the pigtail, $45 shipped to your door.

Do these work w/Gen IV E38 PCMs? Seem to remember reading cruise control has not been figured out for these engines, but if so I'd like to cruise!

Don't think so. Pretty sure you need the BCM for cruise to work with the newer PCMs, and then they use a different switch that only has 3 wires IIRC.

For cruise on yours, check with these guys. Unfotunately, I expect it to be more than $45.
