Default Oil Pump Pickup Tube.

Guys and Gals can anyone tell me what the depth to the bottom of the oil pan should be for an oil pump pickup? We are cutting down a Truck pan and adding on to the front and sides to replace some of what we are loosing. I Would just like to know what the distance to the bottom of the pan should be for the pick up tube.

How about measuring what you have now as a reference. A piece of clay ought to do the trick.

Around a 1/2" is what I am used to.. but I have heard anywhere from 3/8" to 3/4".

To close to the bottom of the pan and it can be a restriction.

The truck pan has a HUGE taper on it so on the shallow part of the pan it was at least 5/8 and on the deep end I dunno never checked.

I was going to shoot for around 3/8" if the tube would allow it without too much trouble.

1/4 no more than 3/8.

You want the pickup to be able to use all the oil in the pan. Not going to have a restriction unless the pick up is bending down closer than that.

This is not a old school engine so those old theorys don't apply.

We typically set them up 3/8"-1/2" and have had no problems at all.

IIRC I set my brothers up at 3/8". Make sure you check the weld for pin holes when your done.

Not sure how you'll be measuring the depth of the pickup when you're mocking it up against just the engine, but as a measuring reference point don't forget to add about 1/8" of thickness for the oilpan gasket.

Straight edge and dial calipers. The stock gasket is .100

Thanks for all the help guys I set it up and and when it was all said and done I measured out the clay I used to check the depth and it measured out to be 7/16" right in the middle of Matt@Texas-speed suggestion.

just thought I would post some pictures of the modified pan. and the reason why it was modified.

you can see the pan hangs well below the cross member in the picture above.

now the rear of the pan is even with the cross member and the front is up slightly.

You cant really tell but the pickup was cut down and then tig welded back together. What we actually did was cut it down right at the pick up and remove the furnace brazed section from inside. We then shortened the tube and slid the pickup back on so it was a slip fit it was not just butt welded back together.

I used some old clay bar wrapped in plastic to measure. just place it in the pan or on the pickup. put the pan on and torque a few bolt down, remove pan and measure the deapth of the clay.

Much like measuring Piston to Valve clearance.

Yep that's what we did like I said it was about 7/16 of an inch when all was said and done.
