5.3l into 95 z28
Well heres my build thread of my 5.3l swap into my 1995 z28. It was originally an automatic lt1 car, then I put a cc503 cam and a t56 in it and then a rod bearing went after autocross, so I found a complete 5.3l for $450. I also kept a somewhat decent account of what I spent so people have an idea if they decide to do an ls swap.
Ill start with a list of parts

Engine total-$3393.65
Transmission work and parts (including clutch, flywheel) total-$1540
Rear end/suspension total-$405
Misc swap related parts (includes fuel and harness work, pedals ect.
does not include swap related engine parts like oil pan and
intake)-$673.24
Total-
$6011.89
My personal estimate of Lt1 parts I had sold to offset cost
Original Long block from my car- $200
1993 intake-$75
Home ported intake-$90
Cc503 cam-$175
Heads with springs-$125
Pacesetter longtubes-$200
Opti-$75

Comp pushrods-$20
Mcleod clutch-$125
Stock flywheel-$50
Input shaft-$40
Intake elbow-$30
Pacesetter y pipe-$87
-total $1692 give or take
The swap started as a budget friendly solution to getting my car
running by next summer, opposed to building the lt1 into a forged 383.
The total ended up being a lot more than I initially anticipated but I
decided to do what I wanted. You could say I could have just bought an ls1 car, but on that budget it would have been bone stock.
Plus this was my first car my dad gave me when I was 16 with a dead engine so it does have some sentimental value. The
goal at the end is to do a front mount so the 5.3l will work out great, already bought the ebay turbo, then will probably go with a huron speed kit.
Plus I dont have to deal with an opti, which i changed 3 times on the
lt1 (once was my fault due to overheating).
In general I guess you could say one could have done the bare minimum
swap for around $1700 (or less depending on parts you bought), assuming
you already had a transmission, although some parts were given to me as
well.
when i first got the engine
sat like this for a while
Can anyone tell me what 5.3l I have by looking at the pistons? I know all the iron blocks had dished pistons, but I saw pictures of 5.3ls with dished pistons that didnt have the + on the piston it was just a smooth dish.
I decided to do a little painting.
Before
After
The area around the headlights needed a little bondo, primer and paint.
Now its ready!
Heres a video of the third start with open headers and no tune. Im currently waiting on a y pipe and braided power steering lines, thats why I couldnt take a longer video. As soon as I get the parts Im going to get a tune. I will update more pictures I take to show under side of the car, and eventually a quarter mile video.

No the 4.8ls have flat pistons. I know that because I accidently bought a 4.8 first, and knew it was a 4.8l because i measured from the top of the piston at BDC to the top of the cylinder with a tape measure and it equaled a 4.8ls stroke. This one equaled 3.62.

I shipped the harness to a company in PA. Their website I believe is lt1350.com. They charged me $50 plus trade in on my old lt1 harness to convert my 99 and up ls1 fbody harness to plug right into my car. It worked out great!

that's not a bad deal, might have to do that myself since When I pulled my LT1 harness out to do it myself I was like "fk this, I'm not to this stage in my build yet, so It can wait" lol

I'm sure I could do it, it's a matter of do I...lol....I've done it once when I swapped out the dash in my 95 Z28 to the 97sytle with a 97 Cluster which I had to rewire the cluster connections, and it wasn't hard at all, but damn it took me about a good 4-5hrs or so...
