Default Opinions Wanted - what year 4L60e / 4L65e

2004 5.3L in a 1970 Chevelle.

Cruiser, not a racer. Fuel mileage is the reason.

What year overdrive transmission should I be looking for?

If you are just leaving it stock it probably won't matter, but I believe 2002+ had some revisions that made them a touch stronger from the factory. Don't quote me on that year though. A 65 is going to have a 5 pinion planetary from the factory which also is a bit stronger.

95-08 whatever you can get the cheapest in working order

Bear in mind the older 1 pc case 4L60E's will require the crank adapter, but are wired/fit the same

The 4l60e family 4l60/65/70 all have the same gear ratios and over drive. Only advantage is minor strength increases among them.

Any Gen III/IV 4l60/65/70 from 98-2007 will work. Make sure it was used with a Gen III/IV V8 as it could have the wrong converter to work with a 5.3L

The older ones (pre 98) came with old SBCs bolted to them. I think the PCM was different as well.

somewhere I read a 700R4 Transmission Extension Tail Housing will fit on a 4L60 transmission and allow for a cable driven speedometer.
.
Is that correct?
.

It will fit the 4l60 not the 4l60e with the 6 bolt tail house. The 700r4 are 4 bolts.

The older ones were a redesign of the 700R4. The external housing was almost identical. The newer ones were a redesigned 2 pc case. 96-97 was the transition, and yes even SBCs got the newer 2 pc case 4L60Es

PCM control did not change from 95-08. 94's and older did not have a PWM function which doesnt not play well with LSx PCMs for swaps

Older 1 pc case 4L60E's used the same 4 bolt tail housing as 700R4's which could be equipped with a cable VSS. The newer ones used a 6 bolt tailhousing which only came with electronic VSS. FYI, the PCM needs an electronic VSS signal to operate properly, so either use an older trans and a B4C camaro dual output VSS or full electric and a cable driver box with the newer trans
