Jeep CJ7 TT-LQ4 Build- Lots of PICS
Hey Guys,
My new project is a Jeep.
This Jeep was bought about 5 years ago for my then GF, now wife. She DD'ed it and wheeled in the U.P of Michigan, while we both attened Michigan Tech for Engineering and Biology (her).
When we got it, it had been built up already.
Here's how she sits now.
1989 Jeep YJ
Speedomotive crate 383 4 bolt main, dart iron eagles, headers, 750 edelbrock, MSD 6AL and blaster 3 coil.
Novak Adapters NV4500 conversion
231 TC with slipyoke elim and custom driveshaft.
Front Bumper with Warn 9.5 Ti winch with synthetic rope.
4.5 inch pro-comp coil spring conversion 4 link front and rear.
35 inch mud terrains on eagle alloy's
F&R detroit tru-trac's with chromoly axle shafts and 4.5 gears
Rear gas tank skid,
Rear bumper/swing out tire carrier.
CJ front clip conversion.
After retiring it from DD duty, it has been wheeled a bit. The main issue with the Jeep is the carb. Between the stick and a fussy carb, off roading isnt fun anymore. We though about doing a TBI conversion but it would have been cheaper to swap a LS since I would do most the computer/harness work.
Since I am big into Turbo's, I figured why not? yeah it will cost a bit more with the fuel system and turbos, but for the added $, the power couldn't be beat. And its just damn Cool! I have done a lot of research and cannot find any documented off road jeep's ever built with any v8 turbos. I figure it should draw a good crowd at show's while have enough power for the back woods hill climbs and mud holes.
I picked up a lq4 off craigslist for the swap.
Here's the rundown on the build:
Stock 2002 LQ4 6.0
TSP 228R on 114lsa cam
PAC 1218 Springs
Injectors- 80 lbers
C6 manifolds
Custom motor/trans mounts
Twin gt3076( prob ebay turbo's, something similar in spec)
No intercooler
Planning 6-10 psi boost, looking for fast spool.
dual intank walbro's -10 feed and -8 return lines
FPR, stock rails(for now)
HP Tuners
aeroforce for gauges
A/C compressor for onboard air (tank in back)
I'm probably missing something. Oh well.
Anyway.
I am documenting with some Videos and also with pictures.
Enjoy!
( Waiting for Photobucket to upload pics....)
Here's some pics of it wheeling the last couple years:
1st time out- clean
The camera man is standing atop the hill we just decented.
1st time out muddy
Winter wheeling
new springs- the other's were sagging pretty good, got them warrantied
Fresh off a CJ front clip swap, loaded up to head to Houghton, MI for a Weekend of Poker Run Wheeling
and onto the Build.............

Ok I started by pulling the front clip off, then removed the engine, trans,Tcase today. Unplugged and pulled the harness off the firewall.
You can also see the LQ4 and the parts I have collected so far for the project.
Kinda self explanatory.

Guess what....
More pictures, haha
The old engine coming out.....
You can see the motor mount pads. These were cut and moved back 3 inches. I also took out the 3 inch body lift as well to keep the center of gravity lower.
Motor's going in to mock up the motor mount adapters
I had to trim up the A/C compressor for the motor mount adapters

Motor's in
tons of room with hood closed
tucking the drive train up in the frame, trying to possibly flat skid the bottom.
Making motor mount adapters
Frame pads cut and moved back 3 inches. These are just blasted and tacked in currently.
Mocking up hydroboost after making firewall adapter out of 1/4 inch steel
fits pretty good, again lots of room

Next up is working on the trans mount/skid plate.
I am still trying to collect parts. This is on a extreme budget and is not a top $$ priority at this point. I will keep working on stuff I can do without spending cash.

Good to see a swap where the truck intake can clear the hood. lol
That lq4 with the 4x4 is going to make a for a very nice off road vehicle, me and my girlfriend took a vacation through northern michigan and up through the U.P., amazing scenery and I bet that makes for great off roading.
Best of luck man, keep posting pics!

Thanks! It appears there's lots of room until the front clip gets back on. It's going to get crowded fast.
I lived up in the UP for 5 years and miss it all the time. Thankfully I am close and am able to visit often.

Yeah a bit has changed, including the nerf bars. Yeah I know the TT is excessive, but why not. It will be something unique so when I take it to shows, it will turn some heads.
the axles are stock with chomoly shafts, and detroit tru tracs, with 4.56 gears. They will stay to get it running but 1 tons and 40's are in the long term plans along with a custom 4link and 3 link front with stretched wheelbase.

They have held so far behind the 425hp 383 for the last 5 years with no issues, its usually spinning the tires so hard that nothing breaks, unless its bogged down in a hole. I did go through a front driveshaft during a mud bog once.

Ok,
I decided to move the motor back another inch and also up 1 inch or so in attempt to flat skid and gain more room. The mounts were tacked, rechecked, then fully welded in.
Here is another shot of the skid, it;s pretty close to a flat skid.
A new trans cover will have to be made since the trans is so far up now after the body lift was removed and the motor was moved up another 1/2 inch.

If you're going to run twin screws on that sucker you may want to consider some studs and new head gaskets as cheap insurance, easy job to tackle with the access you have right now. Once it's done you should get some interesting reactions when you fly past people up a trail. Good luck sir.
Edit: with 6-10 psi studs are warranted.

Yes I agree, studs and new gaskets are in order. I'm probably gonna do the ebay head studs and some 5 layer gaskets, and call it a day. Although there are many on the F.I. section running a good amount of boost on stock gaskets and TTY bolts.
Thanks

Good stuff, it's one of those relatively cheap insurance things that alot of people brush off as over the top and then lift a head 5000 miles down the road. Build is going to be sick when done.
